Baby food for yorkies? So I have a picky eater. She is currently eating Solid Gold. (Good or Bad)? I put about a tablespoon of canned food, about 2 tablespoons of dry and then I add about a teaspoon or so of baby food. Something like sweet potatoes, chicken and rice, turkey and gravy. So the total amount is about 1/4 cup three times a day. The baby food seems to make things interesting enough for her to eat it. She is 18 weeks old and about four pounds. Don't know if this is right or wrong. Any comments? |
I thinks solid gold is excellent food. Sounds like she really enjoys her meals . If she is happy and healthy i personally don't see how a dab of baby food is going to hurt. |
My Cali eats brown rice, mushed boiled egg, carrots and a dab of baby food with a splash of chicken broth. She is a happy girl!!! Always eats good. her bowel movements are perfect and her attitude is spectacular since we threw out the boxed stuff they sell in stores... she wont eat it anymore. She's a spoiled little baby, but growing so strong. I usually get up sunday morning and make a big batch and keep it in a container in the fridge and heat up 1/2 cup for 20 seconds or so. she smiles !!!! |
Please read ingredients to be certain there's NO onion powder in the baby food you are using. Romeo is "hooked" on Beech Nut Apples & Chicken and has been since we brought him home at 12 weeks. |
I use the baby meat and sweet potatoes. I also use Graduate Puffs for a treat. Just make sure you check the ingredients and there are no other things like onion. My labels read, for example, beef, water and that is it. |
Puppies should be fed a commercial diet not home cooked food. If you're going to home cook for a dog, please consult with a vet nutritionist. No I wouldn't feed baby food to a puppy. |
I don't agree with feeding a pup or a dog for that matter baby food, I know some breeders use it for weaning, I had never done so, I don't think is good for the dog if you feed a good quality kibble you can mix a bit of a lower quality wet to entice your dog, I also know a couple of breeders that feed raw and home cook and belive me the ammount of research and ingredients needed for a well balance food is out of my Realm of time..LOL I rather pay for a Good quality dog food, like Natures variety , Blue buffalo and the like... hugs, |
Yes, some types of baby food are okay, but it's unbalanced, so it should be counted as part of treat intake (which shouldn't exceed ten percent of daily intake of food). Both kibble and canned foods are okay as long as they are formulated for puppies. If a large part of the diet is unbalanced, you risk serious medical problems. This is even more important for puppies because they need a certain balance of things for growth. Whether or not Solid Gold is good or not varies extensively with who you ask. I personally do not feed or recommend it. You mentioned on your other thread that Royal Canin is no good. I would say it is a high quality food and I'd choose to feed it before almost all others. |

Thanks for all the replies. It really helps when trying to figure ot something she will eat. As I said, it is only about a tsp. and she is getting both a good quality dry and canned food for most of her nutrition. Good idea to make sure of the ingredients in the baby food. She is not so keen on eating hard treats for her teeth. My vet actually recommended the baby food to me to at least get her started eating. Usually it works. Once she starts, she finishes. She is growing well and playing and seems to be a happy little girl. Thanks again. |
Don't forget that a balanced human diet is not a balance canine diet. I know we think of these darlings as our babies, but they don’t have the same requirements as human babies. Also, at this age, she shouldn't be that fussy, and if you supplement her regular food with what you think is a tastier fair, she will become fussy for sure. Choose a dog food that she will eat without having to add anything, and one you feel good about. There's nothing wrong with giving small amounts of some human food, but I think this should be more of a treat rather than something to get her to eat her regular meal. |
