Keeping Sophia and Peyton in my thoughts today ... all will go smoothly!

Bitsy 02-27-2012 05:24 AM

Just got back home from dropping them off. :( It was really weird coming into the house without them here to greet me.

The house is so quiet and lonely!! I don't know how I could ever survive not having Yorkies! They make this house a home.

The vet said they have a very full schedule today. They may not be ready to come home until 3 or 4:00. It's going to be a long day.

Aww. I know what you mean. It is too quiet here when I have had to drop only 1 off at the vet. I can only imagine having both away for the day.

Keep busy today to pass the time quickly.

You are going to get loads of kisses when you pick up your sweeties. :)

Well, we are back home now. The Yorkies are doing good. A little sore and tired, but all in all not too bad.

This was Sophia's first dental. I feel like a bad Yorkie mom, but I didn't realize how important they were until I started looking into it more. As it turns out, Sophia had to have 3 teeth removed and will be put on an antibiotic.

Peyton had 5 puppy teeth that were retained and needed to be removed. Otherwise, his teeth were good, just needed the basic cleaning.

I will make sure that we evaluate this yearly from now on. I feel bad that Sophia had rotten teeth. :(

I am NOT pleased with my vet office. They had me bring them in this morning at 7:30. They called me at 3:00 to let me know they were doing Sophia's. Peyton didn't get his done until 4:00. :thumbdown I just don't understand why they have you bring them in so early if they are not going to be seen for so long. Keep in mind that they told me to hold food and water after midnight the night before...so they have been ALL day in a crate without food or water just waiting.

I brought in their own crate for them to wait in and they said they didn't want them in it, they would put them in their crates. Oh, and they have me take off their collars and harnesses and Sophia's dress of course, and then they actually put a leash thing around Sophia's neck and start to walk her away while she is pulling on it. I scoop her up and tell them to carry her because the leash pulling on her neck is not good for her trachea. Isn't this something that they should know???

I've been going to this vet office for 10 years. (This is the first dental though.) I like the specific vet doctor that we started using last year, but I don't think I like the practice as a whole. The cost for the cleaning, the extractions, the pain reliever (for both) and antibiotic (for Sophia only) was $862. That is just so much more than I would ever have expected. This needed to be done, and that is why we did it, but I think I am going to shop around for a vet that is more reasonable and that does things the way they should be done.

ladyjane 02-27-2012 04:15 PM

Dentals can get very pricey when there are extractions. If you look at your receipt, I am sure that is part of the reason it was so high.

I would not want my pups sitting all day like that either. If you like the vet, maybe next time you should just tell them that you want the procedure done earlier...or ask if you can bring them in later. Some practices do dentals late in the day... my vet has never done it. Could be a scheduling thing. I don't know.

Don't beat yourself....once you knew it was needed, you did it! Makes you a good mom! :) And, I know, I hate to see mine lose teeth, but sometimes it happens and 3 is really not a lot. One of my pups lost one last year and she had a dental 11 months before that...just happens with some of them.

Glad that they are home with you and ok! :)

I posted on another thread about our dental and the cost. I took 3 of my dogs for dentals last week and paid $553, no extractions , 2 box's of heartworm meds, they do ears, toe nails and checked a couple of things i had questions about. On the other hand i took 1 of my dogs about a month ago for a dental, he had an infection and had to have an extraction, with antibiotics, this cost me over $400 for just him.
I agree that waiting so late in the afternoon to do the procedure was a little much, they did not even have much time to evaluate them after coming out of the anesthetic. The cost is so outrageous.

I know it can be frustating, but your post sounds like a very typical scenario. I really don't think they did anythingn wrong.

It was a little on the high side, but not outrageous, esp. if it included bloodwork and it should have included dental xrays for the pup that got extractions and IV fluids for both.

They do the timing like that because it is just so much easier to admit everybody that needs admitting in the morning. It will really vary by office and how much staff they have, but they only have x amount of time y days a week to do surgery. So to have to stop in that surgery block time, drop everything, and go over admitting stuff with clients doesn't work well. Because each vet has their own tech and either one really needs to be the one talking to the owner preop, it can be difficult. To have to stop a surgery at a certain time to go bring a patient in just would be too hard. But I think for owners who really don't like it, they can find a vet that does surgery in the morning. You could request that your pups are done first, and they may do that for you. Probably won't be too happy about it though... The vet tends to pick the oder the day of depending on what they think may need more time to wake up, the easiest or the hardest first, etc.

Understandable that Yorkie owners don't like the slip lead that vet offices use. It is normal practice though and is considered perfectly safe unless there is a pre-existing problem. I know the word on YT is that a collar can ruin a trachea for life, etc., and there may be a little bit of truth to that...but it's likely far overstated here. However, if the tech was pulling and your pup wasn't coming with her, then for a toy breed, obv she should have picked up.

So what I'm saying is - is you really like this vet, I would definitely not be switching.

Bitsy 02-27-2012 05:37 PM

It did not include the bloodwork...that was an additional charge that I paid 10 days go.

I think I'm going to look around.

Sorry you had a bad experience :( . I'm sure that made an already stressful situation even more stressful. I'm glad Sophia and Peyton are doing well though :). and at least its overwith!!!!

Bitsy 02-27-2012 08:16 PM

Thanks everyone!

The thing is...my Yorkies deserve better than that. I will be on the search for a new vet. :)

107barney 02-27-2012 08:30 PM

I'm glad that the kids are home safe.... I'm sorry it wasn't a perfect experience though :(

Maximo 02-27-2012 09:35 PM

I am very happy for all of you, Bitsy, Sophia, and Peyton, that the big day is over and everyone is home safe and sound.

The price you listed is what I was quoted by my vet. Argh! X-rays are $100 each. I live in the way out burbs, not the big city.

I\'m sorry your furbabies had to wait all day without food or water. :( I try to be understanding with my vet because I know they do emergency surgeries and have urgent patients, but I hate the idea of my guys suffering. Max suffers without food. It is so hard to deny him breakfast or water on surgery days.

The tech should have picked up Sophia when she started pulling on the lead. I handed Max to an employee who used only one arm, no hands, to hold him as she flipped through his chart. Max is not a tiny dog. If it had not been an emergency eye surgery he was going in for, I would have grabbed him back. :( I really like our doctor, but I have such a hard time trusting anyone with my boys.

So glad everything went well for your little sweet things. I am sure they have the mostest wonderful breath now. It is hard taking them in know they will be put under and everything but I also have to look at the upside. If it keeps them healthy then it is just something we have to do. That does seem way high for the dental. CRAZY. My vet charged 125.00 for extractions if the puppy teeth didn\'t fall out. Luckily- Annies did. I am not sure how much for a cleaning. How often do you need to get a Yorkies teeth cleaned?

Give Peyton and Sophia smooches from Annie, Amanda and I.
