HELP giving liquid medicine...she hates it!!! We found out our little Zoey has Giardia. The vet gave us a white chalky liquid. We gave her for 1ml for 5 days, then wait 3 weeks and give 1ml for 5 days again. Well, she did fine the first 5 days and let us give it to her through the dosage syringe. 3 weeks later, our luck changed and she wouldn't even let us get near her with the syringe. We force feed it to her the first 2 nights, but the struggle was too much on night 3....so I decided to inject into her Stella and Chewy treat - she reluctantly ate the last 3 doses. We just found out she still has Giardia. UGH! here we go again. The vet prescribed a new med, still liquid, but this stuff needs to be refrigerated and is chicken flavor. Well - i thought, it's chicken she'll eat it. This time I put the dose on a small plate on the floor for her to eat. 1st dose she took beautifully. 2nd - not so much. We're not even going to try force feeding her, she runs as soon as she sees the syringe. So I thought let me give it to her with her Stella and Chewy treats again. Nope...the treat just sits there. I have lost 2 doses (2ml) of this new stuff. We are at a loss I don't know what to do. This stuff is expensive $45. Any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!!! |
If she has a favorite wet food or flavor of baby food try mixing her medicine in a tbs of the food( without her watching you). Hopefully that will work... |
None of us want to “mistreat” or babies or cause them stress, but sometimes you have no choice. I’ve found that we, as Yorkie parents, get more stressed than the babies do. She will get over the trauma of being forced to take medicine in mere minutes - especially if you give her a favorite treat afterward. It’s always less traumatic for us if my wife doesn’t help. I just hold Bitsy's mouth open squirt the medicine down her throat. She doesn’t like it, but forgets about it quickly. |
Harley doesn't like it, but I make him take meds when needed. I usually hide the syringe until I have him in my lap, line a row of cheese on the arm of the chair, give one piece, then squirt the meds and immediately release him to let him eat the line-up of treats. |
What medicine is it? |
You could ask your vet about a pill replacement. But...if she doesn't like it you will be in a similar position - forcing. Get her before you have the syringe. Put the dose in her cheek pouch. Nothing wrong with forcing when you have to. |
I am guessing it is Metronidazole. The liquid form is nasty and there really is nothing you can put it in. I would ask if you can give her pills....that will depend on the dosage and if they can cut the tabs to the right size for her. Definitely easier to sneak pills into some food or treat. |
Liquid meds in peanut butter My Charlee had a long battle with Giardia. She had metronidazole liquid many times and I mixed her dose in with some natural ground peanut butter. She would lick a spoon clean to make sure she got every last bit. Sometimes she would even bark at me if she felt I wasn't mixing it fast enough. |
With Callie I have had no problems just shooting it in her mouth but recently Sammy my moms yorkie had a dental and had to take an antibiotic and is not easy to give it to so my mom infuses a small piece of meat with the antibiotic and he eats it with no problem. |
Depending on the amount of liquid you need to give; have you tryed the pill pockets? They come in diff sizes. yes you can put the liquid right inside and they eat it right away. pill pockets are my best friend. and my dog LOVES them |
