Impossible! I have to give my pup allergy pills..and omg...you would think a 2lb pup would be easy to give pills..THINK AGAIN! It literally takes TWO people..one to hold him, and one to put the pill in his mouth. I have tried everything..I have put it in peanut butter, he turned his nose up at it..I have crushed it up and put in it yogurt and gave it to him in a syringe. I have also crushed it and put in in water..and he doesn't want any part of any of it!! Any suggestions to make this process easier for both me, and Jack? |
Sometimes liquid is a little easier to give. Maybe ask your vet about it ? That way you could mix in with a tbs of his favorite can food... |
Try putting a yummy treat on a plate and putting the pill close to the treat. Put the plate on the floor and pretend you aren't watching. Supervise to make sure he doesn't spit out the pill in some corner. You can also pretend like it is something dropped on the floor. This works with Max every time. :p With Teddy, I have to put his Interceptor pill as far down his throat as possible and hold his mouth closed until her swallows. He is too smart for any of my tricks or treats. |
After Callie's knee surgery they gave me a pain med that I had many many problems in the past giving her this pill and I told the vet tech that so she went and got this thing called a pill shooter and told me how to use it. No you don't shoot it down the dogs throat you put the pill in put it toward the back of her throat and slightly hit the end which lets the pill gently fall out and down the back of her throat. Callie is VERY hard to get to take pills in food because she only eats small bites and this is the only thing I have found that always 100% works and it doesn't hurt her. |
How about the treat that you put pills in...I think they are called pill pockets. For mine, I wrap their sentinel in a tiny bit of cheese. First I give them the cheese plain and then the cheese with the hidden pill. It's the only thing that works for us! :) |
I always put pills in cream cheese. It covers any bitter taste and they love it. Actually, when one needs a pills they all line up for theirs as well. I would be sneaky the first time and give a little bit without a pill so she knows it's something yummy then later try again with the pill inside. It will work like a charm! |
cheese - or try the pill pockets - they work really well. make sure to get the tiny ones - made by the greenies company. |

I agree with Jodi, cream cheese is a favorite with most dogs, and if you don't have any, other types of cheeses will do. I melt a little mozzarella (a stable in my house) and wrap the pill in that and let it harden so he can't lick it off. Joey gobbles it down, but the trick is you have to find out what your dog loves. |

I also use plain, all meat chicken baby food, 2nd stage, Gerbers. I give a couple bits without the pill, then hide it in the 3-4 taste. And I always offer another taste after the one will the meds in it. I don't like mixing it a large amount of anything, then they have to eat too much to get the entire amount of medication. Mine tend to want to chew the pill pockets, even when I use a small piece to wrap the pill in. As soon as they bite the med, out it comes, lol. |

I use the Pill Pockets to give daily meds to my dachshund. Prior to this she was impossible to get any pill down as well. I always buy the capsule size and break off small pieces to wrap around the pill/s. They are kind of like playdough so they are pretty maliable. They also smell stongly of beef (what I buy) so I wrap a thin layer around the pills and mix with her food. I have not had her refuse to eat them since. Using small amounts also helps with the cost cause they are not cheap. This way they last a really long time. Hope this helps. |
I'm not sure if I'm just super lucky with Chloe or what...but meds are so easy to give her. She is incredibly food/treat motivated, so anytime I have to give her meds, I make her perform all sorts of tricks several times and work really hard for it. By the time she finally gets it, she eats it so fast she doesn't even realize what it is. I guess she just assumes it must be something wonderful since I made her work so hard to get it! -C |
Pill pockets are the way to go. One dog has 5 pills in the a.m., and 5 pills at night, plus 1 at around 2 a.m.....and she usually will gobble those down. Only use enough to completely cover the pills. |
