**Please help!!Feeding correctly??? I have been feeding my 3 1/2 month yorkie Science diet for food. Sometimes I mix it with chicken, carrots, rice, and or bananas. I feed him a 1/4th cup about four times a day. He currently weights 7.6 lbs. Is that too much? What are your thoughts on Science diet? The vet said that science diet was ok but I wanted to see what you all fed your babies. Any advice would be perfect since I am a new owner , thanks |
Vets are usually fine with most commercial dog foods. It does sound like you are feeding an awful lot of food, but I don't know how big your puppy is. The bag of food should say how much you should be feeding according to the puppy's weight. Most commercial dog foods have added vitamins and minerals and your dog should eat the proper amount in order to get the right amount of nutrition. Make sure your puppy eats it's dog food before adding other foods to the diet. |
So, he's eating about 1 cup per day? That sounds like it'd be about right for a growing pup... especially if he's already 7.6lbs at only 3 1/2 months old. Some like SD. I'm not a huge fan of it. I think there are better choices out there for a young, healthy pup. I tend to avoid corn, wheat, soy, by-products, and most grains. Like to see a named meat as the first ingredient. But, also, be sure to look into where the food is being made or produced, as sometimes that's more important than an ingredient list. :) Good luck, :) |
I would cut that back to 1/4 cup three times a day. Total: 3/4 cup. Your pup is large enough that hypoglycemia is not a likely concern. At 8 months to a year of age, you have to reduce the amount of food again. Be careful with the additions of fresh food. If they amount to more than 10-20% of your pup's daily intake, you will be unbalancing his nutrients. Dogs are much more sensitive than humans and must have their nutrients balanced. The most important nutrient ratio is phosphorus (from protein sources) to calcium. |
