**HELP** Overweight yorkie/ hair loss I got my first yorkie as a Christmas present. I LOVE him sooo much. But... He is just shy of four months old an he weighs 7.6 lbs!!!! The vet said yorkies can be up to 12 pounds but I am still worried. Also he had hair loss on the top of his head and on his stomach. Any advice/help/tips? This is my first yorkie and I need as much help as I can get. |
Does your vet say your baby is overweight ? As for hair loss, I would say possible allergies, again, what does your vet say about the balding ? |
Weight is only half of the equation. How tall is your pup from the floor to the top of his shoulder blade/topline, and what is his length? You should be able to see a "waistline," and a tuck (stomach area is higher than chest underneath). You should also be able to feel his ribcage without squeezing too hard. I agree with Lillymae that you should discuss weight and hair loss with your vet. |

t/j - Yikes, um does this count for 7 year olds or can they be long, wide and kind of wienerish looking??!! lol Poor Miss Mini, I will make sure we take a couple pounds off, its been a long winter and the holidays and such....!!! |
Well you all know the obesity problem in humans, dogs kindof reflect that too. Many dogs, large or small are either overweight or obese. Being a frequent (relatively) visitor to vet's offices, my observation is that a good 70% of the dogs I see I would call overweight, if not obese. In Yorkies there should be a mild "tuck up" at the loins. Look at your pup from above to see this. Now this is a guideline for an adult dog, and not a puppy of 4mths old. speak to your vet about your puppy's weight plus their hair loss, is a good first step. |
Has your vet ruled out mites? Obesity is very common, nut not in puppies. If your vet has seen your pup at this weight and didn't see a problem with it, I wouldn't worry. |
