Another flea? Well I posted about this issue a month ago: A month ago, I found a flea on Sasha as well as some flea dirt. I bathed her twice in Dawn dish soap and applied K9 Advantix on her. I hadn't seen any fleas or noticed any flea dirt ever since I applied the Advantix. This evening while I was cuddling with her after getting home from work, she had rolled over onto her back and I noticed a small black speck on her belly. Thinking it was just a fuzz I went to grab it but it moved and I couldn't catch it in time. I'm sure it was a flea but I wasn't able to actually catch it. I looked her over thoroughly trying to find it but I didn't and didn't find any flea dirt either. She hasn't been itching uncontrollably and I haven't noticed any symptoms that would indicate she has fleas. I plan on giving her a Capstar tomorrow to kill whatever fleas she has on her and then applying Advantix. I planned on applying it on the 24th of each month but I know a few days early won't hurt and I don't want to wait especially with seeing what I'm assuming was a flea. Again, is there anything else I should do? I thought applying the Advantix last month would have killed what was on her and helped to repel against them for the month. I guess I'm confused now? |
question ? did you treat your home & yard for fleas ? i think she will still get fleas if they are in your home. maybe you should speak to your vet about it , they may recommend a a safe product for your home as well if you need it... |
Did you wait at least 3 days after the bath to apply the advantix? It will not work if you don't wait after the bath. It has something to do with the oils on the skin. I'm not sure exactly but I know I have done the same thing with bad results. It is on the directions somewhere. Do you have a tick problem? You are treating for both. I just use the regular Advantage because I am only treating for fleas. |

The reason I chose Advantix is because it also repels against mosquitoes which is always a problem around here. We don't really have a problem with ticks. I didn't wait 3 days after I gave her a bath but I didn't see that listed anywhere on the directions but if it's true then that could be the reason. Then again, I also read that it's waterproof? I bought some Capstar today and gave her one pill so if there is in fact a flea or fleas on her then it should kill them. I plan on calling my vet to see if it's ok to apply the Advantix later on as well. |

i actually ended up switching back to Frontline Plus since that's what my vet recommends. i had used Frontline in the past, usually just for the summer months though and never had an issue. i probably should have just stuck with it from the get go. this year i probably should have kept applying the Frontline even through the winter months. we've had a much warmer winter this year than we've ever had. that "deep freeze" never really set in. anyways, i only saw the 1 flea on monday evening. i gave her a Capstar on tuesday and a few hours later i applied the Frontline. |
I used organic lavender dish soap to repel the fleas on Paris, and he smelled nice also. |
I use diatomaceous earth during flea season. It seems to work well. It's a natural white powder that you put on their coat. It's ground up shells so it's microscopic rough edges sticks to the flea's shell and tears their shell apart. You just need to make sure you get food grade de though, not the stuff they put in pools. I get mine at a local pet store. |

It seems to work well for us. When it warms up, I put some on my hand and then rub it on his belly and fur. I also sprinkle it in my backyard just in case. We haven't had fleas since we started using it. I don't know if it's just because we haven't encountered fleas or if it's the diatomaceous earth, but we like it. Also it's natural so we like it. |
