Still feeding your pups chicken jerky treats? This subject has been in the news for over a year and yet pets are still dying, suffering kidney failure and/or becoming deathly ill after eating these types of treats. The FDA is still refusing to do anything to stop the importing of these deadly treats, as usual. Susan Thixton at Truth About Pet Food is trying to get answers about these treats, these are her two of her most recent articles concerning the run around she is getting and the silent treatment she's also recieving......There's some info she's trying to check up on concerning the possible chemical traced to these treats, it's diethylene glycol. Of course the FDA is claiming they can find no reason for the contamination so in the mean time the treats will still be allowed to be imported until they can find the exact cause even though they are causing a problem for our pets. Since the store owners are still choosing to stock these items it looks like it's up to us to protect our pets and refuse to purchase these .... U.S. Senator Calls FDA on the Carpet with Chinese Jerky Treats FDA Silence is Telling |
I sent a email to both the FDA and Petsmart. The one to the FDA was pretty much asking why aren't they requiring all the chicken jerky made in China to be pulled and they told me because they can't find whats causing it. I asked Petsmart why they are still selling chicken jerky that is making dogs sick and they said its up to the consumer to decided what is safe for there pet and whats not. The only chicken strips I will buy from the store are blue buffalo because they are made in the US but most of the time my mom makes some for Callie and her dogs with a dehydrator. It upsets me that if this was a human product causing problems they would have pulled all of them by now. |
In Susan's article it states that since just this November there has been 400 new cases of sickened pets reported to the FDA. It's a well known fact that only about 1% of problems associated with pharmaceutics and food ever gets reported, so the number listed at 400 is just a drop in the bucket as to how many pets are truly dying from these treats..... The FDA should immediately stop the importing of these and then look for the source....We shouldn't even have to rely on senators, pet owners and pet advocates to do what the FDA is supposed to be doing in the first place. People who still would like to give their pets dried treats can do as your doing and make their own in a dehydrator or do a search on the internet for organic vendors who make these. |
If it wasn't for YT I never would have known this! My mom loves to give Baby waggin trails. I told her no more! Then I saw I had some jerky on the bottom of her treat jar. I couldn't remember if they were waggin trails or milo's kitchen, so, they got thrown out! No taking chances over here! And Taylor, you are right...if it were for humans, it would have been pulled from the shelves by now! |
It's soooo sad. I can't believe how big of an issue it is becoming and that they are still on shelves. My stepmom used to buy the dogs Waggin' Train all the time and thankfully, I got her to stop. I don't even want a chance of Jackson getting one while he's over there. It's sooo scary. You have to read packing SO carefully too. I do have some I bought from bestbullysticks.com that were made in the US but I'm probably going to stop buying them at all, it's so hard to trust. |
I can't believe they still sell them here at Petco & PetSmart. It's outrageous. |
Wow. Didn't know about this. Thanks more than I can say for posting this. |
Before I saw this post my chi was eating Milos and she tried 1 waggin trails chicken jerkey. I threw the entire bag away because she went 4 days without a bowel movement. I was scared. Thank God there was no blockage. I had to give her probiotics by syringe. It was the week b4 I got Ayla, my 8 month old yorkie pup. Thank Goodness. |

A few Milo's Kitchen treats are made in the US. Those little meatball looking things are. But the chicken jerkey is made in China. :( |

Several years ago we gave Daisy and Teddy Bear Wagon Train chicken jerkeys and didn't realize that was what was making Teddy throw up all the time. We thought they were made from pure chicken with no additives and didn't see how they could possibly make Teddy sick. After we heard about dogs getting sick from them we quit giving them to our pups and they stopped throwing up. I feel so bad about ever giving them to them. They loved them. |
Thank God Buster and Maggie don't like those things. I think I bought them once and they didn't like them. |
I used to feed mine those every night a few years ago. I stopped doing it because I realized they were all from China. Instead I get Kona Chips and I highly recommend them to anyone still wanting to give their furkids chicken jerky treats. A lady was feeding her dog the chicken jerky strips from China when he got sick. Afterwards, she decided to make her own, completely USA made and began selling them. I believe you can order a sample for $1. |
