Which orijen product is best for food allergies? Hi all! This question is actually in reference to my shih tzu, Lola. The vet thinks she might have developed food allergies from blue buffalo (perhaps the company changed the ingredients). So we've switched to Orijen, which the girls LOVE, but I was wondering if anyone knew which of their formula's is specifically for food allergies? Or which one is the best? Poor thing has itchy paws, and just about everything else, dry skin and dried, itchy spots on her body. Plus a weird odor. She is on several medications but I'd like to help her out with her diet as well. Thanks! |
I wouldn't think Orijen would be a good food allergy food, considering they all have multiple proteins in each formula and it's not really a "simple" ingredient list. Great food, but not what I'd call a food for allergy sufferers. Acana has now released three new foods- Lamb and Apple, Duck and Pear and Chicken and Potato available in the US now. These are more simple, a bit less protein and fat, same company as Orijen. Otherwise, I think California Natural and Natural Balance are nice choices for food allergy sufferers. |
Thanks! So California Natural is my best bet? I bought a small bag of it because she is very picky and so far so good. The CN herringbone and sweet potato formula was recommended by my vet. I'm looking for a back up though because she is a picky eater and knows clearly her likes and dislikes. Since I'm happy with the way the girls are gobbling up the Orijen I figured I would try to find a formula within the same company since Lola seems to love the Orijen. I've read on their testimonials that their Fish formula seems to be good for food allergies and skin issues but the company itself hasn't specified that. I wonder if it might be the omega's from the fish? I'd be willing to try anything at this point. |
Natural Balance also has a number of Limited Ingredient Diet foods. It is sold at Petco/Unleashed. Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance Allergy Formulas for Dogs |
One of the Orijen's that was recommended for Gizmo when I was going through the hell of allergies was the 6 fish. |

I've tried so many limited ingredient foods with Bayleigh's allergies. Unfortunately I finally had to take her to a local vet that specializes in them. She has been on Royal Canin Rabbit/Potato now for over a year and is doing much better. Also keep an eye out for "flax" in foods, it seems to trigger Bayleigh every time and most foods are now using it. She also has seasonal allergies that are now kicking into high gear (we're in Las Vegas, so it starts early), and I have found that 1/4 tablet twice daily of chlortrimeton works the best. Good luck with your baby, allergies are no fun! |
