New Yorkie owner I just got my Yorkie puppy Max a week ago ... and have been reading about what to feed him on this site. I'm confused! I know they will eat anything ... but isn't it bad for him?? Shouldn't he eat only his puppy food and the occasional treat? |
Hi welcome and congrats on your new puppy well he should be eating a good quality puppy food. Table food can cause tummy trouble. Try to find a food that he will like and as long as he does well on it try to stay with it. Hope this helps... |
WELCOME! Lots of nice people and a wealth of info here. What food did he go home with? As a puppy, I would feed only puppy food - no table food - and use kibble, or treat, for training :) |
:welcome4: 2 YT! & congratulations on your new yorkie Max. I would stick to his regular puppy food and the occasional treat. Anything else may upset his tummy. I would wait until he is a bit older before introducing new foods. |
Thanks for the warm welcome. His breeder sent him with a bag of Royal Canin puppy food ... but he doesn't like it. It is a struggle to get him to eat it. He'll eat a little at a time out of my hand but not from the bowl, and not a lot. He barely eats 1/4 cup a day. Should I try other brands? Any suggestions? |
hi and welcome to YT, i'm a fairly new yorkie owner myself the main thing i look for in a food is to make sure meat is the first ingredient (not a by-product), and make sure corn is not in the first 5 ingredients, as it's hard for them to digest. my puppy is eating blue buffalo for small breed puppies (and my cats are eating blue buffalo as well). some people complain that BB makes their pets gassy, but mine seem to be doing well on it.. every pet is different and sometimes it just takes a little bit of experimenting although, if you've only had him a week, i would give him a little bit of time before deciding he doesn't like the food. i had the same problem with miles when i first brought him home; he wouldn't eat any food or drink any water. when i took him to the vet and expressed my concern, he told me that he wasn't dehydrated or malnourished so it wasn't anything to worry about, he was probably just getting used to his environment, and to give him some time. sure enough, now he's eating and drinking with gusto hopefully i was at least a little bit of help.. lol :P good luck! |
