Cant figure out whats wrong :-( So I am new to YT and just recently got a small yorkie a few months ago. Hes about 6 months old and weighs 2.5 pounds. I'm just not sure what to do anymore, and was hoping someone had some advice!! About a month after I got little Dexter, he got giardia, which lasted quite some time (two rounds of panacur and two rounds of flagyl), but he is finally testing negative for giardia. In the middle of the giardia I decided to switch food to wellness, which he loves! After he was testing negative for giardia, he was still having blood in his stool...went back on flagyl and it went away while he was on the medication. Once he was off the meds the blood in stool came back. He recently had a comprehensive fecal culture, and the results came back negative meaning he is healthy. The Vet suggested going on Hills ID and that maybe the protein intake is too much in the wellness or that he just has a sensitive stomach. We have been on the ID for 2 days now, and he still has blood in his stool! I'm in panic mode now, and the vet said the next step would be to have an ultrasound and to see an internal medicine doctor (all of which is very expensive) Does anyone have other suggestions as to what this could be or what I can do to fix this before I give the go ahead with the ultrasound? i'm so lost, but i love Dexter so much!!! |
First off, so sorry you are having these problems. Now, even though Wellness protein may be too high, Science Diet is a horrible food, yet vets always push it. Ask the vet what he believes is a suitable percentage of protein for your baby and/or look at what the Science Diet says and try to match that up with a more premium food. Check this site for pet food reviews: Dog Food Reviews - Main Index - Powered by ReviewPost. Also, if you don't like what your vet has to say, see another one! Your baby is so tiny, which is usually directly correlated to higher health problems. I hope he gains a couple more pounds! Please keep us updated on his progress too. |

so sorry you and your baby are going through this. has there been complete bloodwork to rule out pancreatitis and other problems that can cause blood in the stool? if so and nothing has been found, i would say the ultrasound is your next option. at your little one's size and age it's very important to get help asap. i will keep you both in my thoughts and prayers. |
Hi, so sorry your pup is having problems. Did your vet suggest getting your pup on probiotics? After so many rounds of medication it takes time for the good bacteria to build up in the gut.... probiotics can speed up this process. Anything can cause blood in the stool, from foods and treats to a stressful environment. Prescription Science Diet is fine for dogs fighting illnesses, changing foods too frequently can also cause intestinal upset=blood in the stool. The blood won't stop until the intestines are healed and working properly. Do you give your puppy any kinds of treats or chews? These can also present problems, as many pups are sensitive to some types. |

I have a new outlook on dog foods now that one of mine will be using an RX diet. After years of trying every limited ingredient food on the market and nothing helping her I believe you need to address the issue at hand. When a dog has IBD or allergies like mine you need to use what will help them. There has been nothing on the market so far that worked over the haul with her. So I can no longer make blanket statements regarding foods like Science Diet being of lesser quality. You need to look at the specific they are formulated to address and how that formulation will help with the specific issues of your dog. :) |

I'm so sorry about your baby....We are having the same problem with our Murphy...We have been working on this problem for 2 years now and our vet is working with us daily and we have had lots of tests and medicine. He is 5 and has not ever had a firm stool. He goes 3 weeks fairly fine and then a week of the stool just like water, with some blood and won't eat anything....We have tried every food the Vet has recommended and now I am cooking his meals which are very bland...He cannot take Immodium, Lomotil or even the pink stuff that might help harden his stool. He vomits them within 5 min...We even agreed and had exploritory surgery to see if anything would show up. We just don't know what to do except keep on trying. |
other things that can cause blood in stool, if your dog eats or plays with lizards and if he eats plants those can cause it. There is one plant ill have to look for the name that its not good to have in your yard if you have pets.. |
