Puppy doesnt want puppy food? Sampson is 5 months old and i have him on the royal canine puppy formula for yorkies. He was eating it just fine until he discovered my older husky's food bowl(we feed her Blue for adult dogs). He only wants to eat her food and my bf thinks its not a good idea for them to share a food bowl (not taking in account its adult food and not for puppys.) everytime he tries to eat from her bowl we tell him no and he wimpers away. Hes not eating his food though, his bowl will go untouched and im worried he isnt eating enough. Is there a better way to teach him not to eat from her bowl. We free range both of them. Sadie our husky doent have much of a problem with him eating her food but sometimes she will see him at her bowl and she will walk over and eat it all.. which may be causeing overeating problems for her as well. Should i switch puppy foods? Whats the best way to teach both dogs to only eat from their dish when they have both dishes infront of them? Advice would be great and highly appriciated. :) |
Scheduled feeding seems like it'd be the way to go in this situation. :) Though you can always get an all life stages food that both dogs can eat as well. |
We had the same problem with Maggie. She would ONLY eat what the 'big' dogs ate. We also free feed them. We ended up switching all our dogs to an all life stages food. We fed Nature's Variety Prairie and they all loved it. There are other good all life stages foods out there. You can get samples from your local pet food store, or you can contact some of the companies for samples. It made our lives a lot easier to have a good food that they all liked and could eat. |
We switched to Taste of the Wild Pacific stream so all 3 of ours can eat the same thing- saves money too, I can buy the big bag! We feed on schedule, on advise from our vet, to prevent food fights and overeating. |
They do go through a period when they are almost finished growing where they get ultra-fussy with food. I have my dogs sit and stay before I place their food down and they finished their own bowls. The puppy may just be wanting what his big brother has and it's actually more common for the adult to want the puppy food, it has more fat, because puppies need lots more calories per pound than adults. It wouldn't hurt if you put a few of the husky's kibble in Sampson's bowl, and some people switch to adult food by 6 months. |
I just switched Sampson's food to the puppy version of Sadie's food.. now Sadie keeps trying to eat Sampson's food! |
You may actually be ok switching him to the adult formula of Blue. Everyone has different opinions though. I know some people don't even believe in feeding puppy food and start their puppies off on adult food right away regardless if it's an all life stages food or not. If you continue to feed him puppy food, you may just have to keep Sadie separate from the little guys food until you switch him to adult food which I know may be difficult but it may be the only option for awhile. |
