Orijen=drinking TONS of water? Some of you might have read that I tried Orijen two days ago. Baby only had it twice (two shot glasses full-one per night) mixed with her Evangers. Well she is drinking so much water it's crazy! She's jumping off the bed every 1.5-2 hrs to get a drink. She never does that! Could this be related? If this continues I will be ditching this food, $16.99 or not. She's not urinating anymore than usual though, so I'm not thinking UTI. Just very thirsty! Anyone had this happen with high protein food? |
Actually, yes it may be the higher protein. Gizmo got a hold on my mom's dog Candiae once and it made him very, very thirsty. Just depends on the dog and on the food. And he, who is usually a camel, was peeing all the time from simply eating one meal of Canidae. |
Granted, on Orijen 6 fish Giz didn't drink anywhere near as much when he had Canidae, and Orijen was higher in protein. Just depends on the food and how your baby reacts to it. I know Orijen has a 100% customer satifcation. Can you return the food back to the store? |
yes its because of the higher protein count. Morgan does this too when switching foods at first but then goes back to her normal water intake. If Baby eats all her food at one time and isn't a grazer (like morgan), maybe try adding water to the kibble so she's taking in both at the same time. Her body isn't used to processing that amount of protein so the kidneys need more water. If her intake level doesn't subside then I'd take her off the food. Orijen is a good food though. The company that makes it also makes Acana which i think is lower in protein and just as good. |

Taryn, I thought of returning it, but don't wanna go back into that pet store. |
Yup, higher protein will sometimes cause excessive thirst at first but it usually goes away. Jackson ate higher protein-ish grain free foods for most of his life, then for a few months we switched to grain inclusive low protein and wasn't thrilled with the results, so back on to Acana we went, and for the first week he drank a lot more, but it stopped and now he's drinking back to normal. He also was not peeing any more. He's been on Acana again for three bags now, we are on Pacifica now. I am not one who thinks high protein is bad (the latter actually) but sometimes I think some dry food have excessive protein that's not really necessary. I prefer Acana over Orijen (made by same company) but Orijen is a fantastic food that works very well for some dogs - I just prefer Acana. High protein in raw is different than high protein in dry kibble, for example, because there's less moisture. It's hard to explain, lol, I hope someone else can explain better. But I would hold it out and let her eat the whole bag to see any results... one bag isn't going to hurt, unless of course she's having diarrhea or throwing up or something extreme, then I'd stop the food. Also, I would buy regular measuring cups vs. using shot glasses (unless you know how much is in it). But it's good to know how much the dog is eating per day. Jackson eats 1/3 cup in the AM and 1/3 cup in the PM, mixed with Weruva wet food so he's 16lbs, very active, and gets 2/3 cup per day. So you don't want to over-feed and cause loose stools, etc. You can do a doggy calculator to see how many calories your dog should be getting each day, but don't forget to include any treats, chews, wet food, etc, so you can decrease the amount of kibble. Acana has 430 kcal/cup. |

How much does your Yorkie weigh? Try feeding less Orijen. Take it slowwwwwwwwwly no need to transition quickly. If me, I would feed by weight in grams. |

Probably with Orijen, which is a tad more calorie dense, I might cut it down to 2 1/2 to 2 shot glasses, as your Yorkie is quite a bit more active than my Doxie. I hope that helps and ya, I realize this is just for the short term. |
