Dragging his butt? Last night after Harley went outside for a potty break I noticed he was dragging his butt across the floor. So I picked him, checked out his backside and he had a "dingle berry" (don't laugh! That's only thing I could think of to explain lol) stuck in the hair around his bottom. So I got a warm cloth and wiped it clean then went ahead and trimmed the hair around his 'exit only' area. :animal36 But again this morning I saw him doing it on the patio after his morning potty break so I picked him up and checked him out but nothing was there. What I'm wondering is.. what makes them do this? My oldest terrier mix TA drags her bottom on the floor when she needs to have her anal glands expressed.. so maybe it's that? But I didn't think Harley would have any problems with his anal glands since his stool is always nice and firm. My vet explained to me how I can express the anal glands myself but warned it is a NASTY job! :p Stinky butt! Any ideas? |
Do it when you give a bath in the tub! Make sure keep your face clear or your get right in the face! Belive me I have and it Stinks! Feel for the gland on each side and push in and up slowly! You should have the vet show you first before doing it! lily |
I let the vet or the groomer do it! ;) |
Keep an eye on him. If he keeps scooting, he probably does need to have his anal glands expressed. Well worth the $ to have someone else do it, IMHO!!! |
Question then...the anal glands, area around the hole? Because, I have noticed that my puppy is doing the same thing but some times the area looks like it is swollen, and I was thinking that he is constipated. |
I'm not sure if you can see from the outside whether or not they are swollen but you can tell when you.. well go in and feel on the right and left sides. Our poor TA's get soo big so fast and you know when shes sick! My mom usually has the groomer do it but we had her hair cut and apparently they 'forgot' to do it and didn't tell us. So the poor girl was acting sooo sick and in pain but we couldn't work out what was wrong so we rushed her to the vet and they took her in the back, then brought her back out and she was whole other dog! All smiles and tail wagging! |
You can probably tell if her anal gland is full just by the smell. Dogs that need their anal gland expressed tend to have stinky butts. It's not a regular poop smell, it's hard to describe but once you've smelled it you probably will recognize it easily in the future. I'm a dog groomer and deal with anal glands on a regular basis. It's not hard to express them but you can bruise the dog if you don't know what you are doing and squeeze too hard. Most groomers will do it for you for a small fee. It's best to do it during the bath because it is stinky so if you have a groomer do it without a bath plan on taking him home and giving him a bath afterward. Most dogs don't ever need to get their anal glands expressed. The only times I have ever seen my little Brandy scoot on her butt I have found dried poop back there stuck in her fur. |

Well, dogs who have firm healthy stool usually never have any trouble with their anal glands bc everytime they do their business they are expressed. But since my moms dog TA is on a special high fat science diet can food and bottled water so her stool is always very loose and oily and bc of this when she goes potty her anal glands are never expressed. And Harleys poo is always firm so that's why I was asking if there are any other reasons why he would drag his bum. |
Worms would make a dog do this also. Any chance of that? |
He might need his anal glands express or he might have worms. Also it can be he feels something stuck and is trying to get rid off it. I guess I will watch him and if he keeps dragging his butt you can contact the vet and ask what to do. |
Maybe he got a little scratch from last night? Maybe use a little anti-itch type cream or something, just a thought. I would also look at his poop for worms. If it keeps up, take him in. The only time mine scoot is from 'butt plugs' we call them; calling for a butt bath and clipping. I wouldn't let him keep it up for too long, maybe a couple of days at most before a trip to the vet. |
Well, I haven't seen him do it since.. but I'm going to keep a good watch on him.. I don't think it's worms bc I always do poo investigation.. ewww.. just bc I always need to see if he's passing any random foreign objects.. lol.. But if he does it again.. his bum is going straight to the vet! hehe |
