Cerenia for car sickness... Has anyone used this for their baby? Ian vomits almost every time he goes for a ride. It's weird, but when my husband drives, and I hold him, he doesn't. It only happenens when he is sitting and restrained in his car seat. His vet prescribed 2 pills to be given 1-2 hours prior to riding. I was thinking about giving him 1, or maybe 1/2 to see how he does. I googled it, and it appears to be effective. I haven't given him any yet. I wanted to get your opinion. Thanks!:) |
I know a breeder that uses it for one of her girls, she always vomits when she goes for a car ride, Cerenia has help her a lot, by the way her girl is a silky Terrier.. hugs, |
Do you know if she gives her silky two pills, or less? Ian's vet said to give two. Ian weighs almost 10 lbs. I was thinking of starting out with less to see if that helped. |
Can he see out the window when he's in your lap or in his carseat? Is his carseat in the front or back seat? Not being able to physically see where he is going can cause carsickness. Also being in the backseat vs front seat can also cause it for some reason. I haven't given Cerenia to my dog but when I was a vet tech I remember the vet prescribed it for motion sickness and acute vomiting. Worked like a charge with no ill effects. |
I just looked up the dosage for Cerenia in my notebook i carried while a tech. The dosage for motion sickness is higher then the dosage for acute vomiting so if you only give 1/2 or 1 pill then it probably won't work. For a 10 lb dog, he should be getting 2 24mg tablets two hours before traveling. He should also be fasted 1 hour before given the tablet for it to be most effective. So a total of 3 hours preparation for traveling. LOL |
I have used Cerenia for car sickness a couple of times when we are going on a long drive. It has worked like a charm for Taycie. I love it! |

The vet only gave him 4 pills with two refills. |

Your welcome! Have you tried anything else to help with motion sickness? i know some people have used dramamine and rescue remedy with success. There is also the Thundershirt anxiety wrap. I use it on Morgan for thunderstorms and fireworks. they sell them at petco and petsmart now too. |

Kalina82, I'm getting this tomorrow! Thank you for the idea!! Hopefully it'll work for car rides. |

If Ian is vomiting as a result of anxiety in the car then the thundershirt should help him out. if he's vomiting because he literally gets sick to his stomach from the motion of the car then I don't know if it will work. Its definitely worth a try though because if it doesn't work you can return the shirt for a full refund. |
I bought it, and can't wait to try it out. |
Good luck! I hope it helps. I would put it on then 10 minutes later take Ian for a short drive around the block and then leave it on for a little while when you get back home. Take him on a short car a day and gradually make them longer so maybe by the time you go on a long trip he will be fine. |
I am so glad you told me about the thundershirt!! I've used it twice on Ian, and he hasn't vomited yet during car rides. Normally, he will vomit within fifteen to twenty minutes of riding, but with the shirt on, he didn't! I did not want to have to give him meds every time we went for a ride, so this is a life saver. I guess I'll hold onto the pills, just in case. I don't want to throw $25.00 for four pills down the drain. |
So glad to hear that the shirt works for him!! |
Hey all. Glad to read your previous posts. I'm giving Cerenia to my little girl today for the first time. She does get motion sickness despite several successful short trips, sometimes it's just the excitement of arriving that causes her to vomit. She does best if she's restrained in her car seat and I sit next to her and pet her with a calming voice telling her things she knows, like talking about her toys, going for a walk etc. etc. I can do this while my husband is driving and when I'm alone I put her in front in the car seat. This trip will be roughly 2 hours and I'd like to sit in the front seat with my husband but it might be too much anxiety for her to sit alone. :( We've tried to desensitize the car so we only use it for happy trips (thankfully our vet and groomer are in walking distance!) she has toys in the car and our destinations are always happy places. :car: I can tell she enjoys looking out the window and she's glad to be wherever we are when we get there - it's just the getting there! Some background, Lily is blind in one eye :shade: from an accident caused when she was just a few months old (before we adopted her). My gut instinct is that having only one sighted eye does cause her some problems with motion by not being able to get that true balance. Just thinking about driving around with one eye shut, I can imagine it must be tough for her but she's such a trooper. We limit or don't give her food before trips, sometimes I schedule things early in the morning so I know she has an empty tummy and I can give her breakfast soon after. I always give her a LONG walk before car rides to help calm her. I know these things have helped because she used to just shake when she got into the car but now she'll tolerate it and we have about a 20% success rate without any vomit on trip less than 15 minutes. SO in comes Cerenia :nursing: I asked the vet to prescribe this medicine for her because we're leaving for a short weekend visit to the in-laws in San Diego this weekend. We'll leave later this evening, about 7 or 8pm. She had a good breakfast this morning and she'll get in some good long walks today to help wear her (and empty her) out! I'm planning on giving her the tablets at 4pm so that the meds have 3-4 hours to get into her system before we leave. I planned to give her the medicine in about 1TBS of wet food as that's the only way she's taken tablets in the past and at least she'll have some easily digestible food in her stomach that's not too much. I'll fast her from any other food or treats today. Here's my question (if you made it this far!! Sorry for the long message) The directions say to prevent motion sickness in a 10lb dog, the dosing should be 2x24mg tablets. However my vet only gave me 4x16mg tablets and said try one and if it doesn't work, give her two - which are the instructions for acute vomiting and not the higher dose suggested for preventing motion sickness. Any thoughts? Please let me know if any of your babies have had luck with this and what the dosing was. I so appreciate your feedback and I'll be sure and post our story (hopefully a successful one!) when we return on Sunday/Monday. Many thanks! xo |
I hope you have a wonderful trip. I've never used Cerenia for car sickness, but it definitely has helped for nausea. Years ago I had a little one who got sick from the car, but she fortunately outgrew it. I used Benadryl a long time ago, and it helped her. |
