Diet change caused digestive upset.. Well i decided to change Oscar from Royal Canin because it seemed like he was itching and biting his feet a lot more. So i decided to try Orijen 6 Fish. Although i did mix 1/2 & 1/2 , whoa it did not agree with him at all. I felt so bad , what a bad mommy. So i gave him some white rice and cottage cheese with a tsp of Nutrical for a couple days and , Wa La , back to normal. So then i had to do some research for another food. I found Solid Gold Hunden Flocken. A Lamb & Rice hypoallergenic formula. I have been giving him the above mixture and just adding 5 or 6 pieces of food at each feeding. He is doing really well with that so i guess i will just increase the amount of kibble slowly at each feeding while decreasing the amount of the rice mix. I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who participates on this site because all the advice and opinions really helped me in this particular situation. I want to take the best care possible of my baby and i think Yorkie Talk is an awesome place and i have really learned a lot from just reading all the blogs. Thanks and have a great day.....:) |
changing food I am changing Latte to a hypoallergenic food as well. I found a great article that said to mix 25% of the new diet with 75% of the old diet for 2 days. Then mix the food equally for 2 days. The 75% new/25% old for 2 days. The vet tech also said it should take about a week. And remember, I haven't found a place yet that would not take back the dog food that your pet won't eat. Save your receipt, just in case your dog doesn't like it. We're going with Royal Canin Rabbit and if he doesn't eat it, back it goes for another try! |
Thanks, i will take the orijen back to petsmart. Yes, i am going very slowly this time. He does like the solid gold and it is agreeing with him so i think he will be good with that. Also good luck with yours..... |
Good job for slowing down with the transition, though some dogs can switch cold turkey it's much easier on their tummies to do it gradually. I'm happy to see you've found a much higher quality food that Oscar enjoys ! |
thank you i feel better about that too.... |
Orijen is a great food but it's often WAY too rich for most dogs, especially coming from RC (which is a decent food, as well, but certainly not as rich). Orijen does not work for all dogs. Also, you are supposed to mix 75% old food with 25% new. Half and half was probably not a gradual enough transition for him. I am glad you found a food he seems to be doing well on! :) |
Stomach upset Latte hasn't had one bite of her new hypoallergenic food, but has been eating salmon, tilapia and duck jerky and sweet potato. Well, SOMETHING REALLY upset her stomach!! Wouldn't eat al all yesterday and threw up three times and had diarrhea this morning. Tonight she ate a tiny bit of fish. I am not giving her any more duck jerky (even though I softened it and broke it into tiny pieces.) She's pretty perky otherwise, but, of course, I'm worried about her. Should I make her a little chicken breast (even though in the past she was allergic to it-itchy-wise?) I'm planning on seeing how she is tomorrow and calling the vet. |
oh i am so sorry latte is not feeling well. i was so worried for oscar as well. maybe you could try the same thing i did for oscar. a little cooked white rice and some nutrical every couple hours for the day just to settle her tummy . then i just started adding a couple pieces at a time of the new kibble. this morning he is doing much better. i sure hope your baby feels better real soon. |
