My 10 wk old won't eat dry food anymore I got Dre at 8 weeks. He was healthy and eating dry food called Nutri Source Rice and Chicken formula for puppies. Less than 9 days later he become very sick with what the vet says was a bacterial infection. He also developed hypoglycemia. Very stressful time for me as this is my first yorkie, let alone, first dog! So now he's a healthy, bouncy pup but won't eat dry food. The vet had him on Royal Canin Medi Cal Recovery (wet food for sick dogs) until his stomach settled. I always left the dry food out for him but he wouldn't touch it. So then I went back to the vet and got him Medi Cal Development wet food. He loves the stuff but I need him back on the dry food so he can feed whenever he wants. I've tried another dry food product by Royal Canin but he won't touch that either and the kibbles are quite big for him I think. I prefer Nutri source as the kibbles are so little. Perfect for him. Help! How do I wean him off wet food. I am so scared he'll be come hypoglycemic again! |
Have you tired mixing the wet with the dry? Then if he eats that maybe you could slowly add less wet food everyday. |
I've tried that. He just licks all the wet food off. I even tried force feeding him (tough love) and he'll attempt to eat 1 or 2 but that was in the beginning and now he won't even bother. He'll spit them out and walk away. He won't make himself hypoglycemic on purpose will he? I am so nervous about that. I spent $800 at the vet getting him well. So this is why I keep up with a good proportion of wet food so he is never hungry. I also tried Nutri-Cal to simulate his appetite b/c I've heard this works but no. How long should my yorkie go without food? He is 1.76 pounds roughly maybe more. Breeder predicts he will be up to 4 to 5 lbs when he is an adult. |
If all he will eat is wet food, that's not such a bad thing. At only 10 weeks and less than 2lbs, the most important thing is that he eats. I wouldn't stress too much about it...you've got plenty of time to find a dry kibble that he will eat. Just be sure to feed the wet food according to the directions to be sure he's getting a proper amount. Also, have you tried moistening the kibble to soften it? At 10 weeks, he may have a hard time chewing it. A lot of non-chain pet food stores have free sample bags of very good food to try. Good luck. |

Try fresh kibble. If kibble sits around in the bowl during the day, it starts to go stale. My boys get a little picky when we get to the bottom of a 5-pound bag that I keep tightly closed. Normally I would say don't change the kibble he was eating at the breeder's home, but if your pup isn't eating, it might be worth a shot. Natural Balance makes a "tiny bites" version. Fromm kibble are also among the smallest I can think of. A tiny bit of plain yogurt (no additives) may stimulate his appetite too. |
I brought mine home at 13 weeks,she was fed wet mostly and a tiny bit of kibble 3 times a day for several weeks until she settled in well. Then I began changing the balance a very tiny bit at a time over several more weeks (yorkies are very smart and the goal you are going for does not have to be reached tomarrow). She is now a year and is still getting kibble mixed with a little wet in the morning and then just kibble in the evening. Your baby wont make himself sick on purpose but he is a baby and they dont know that something will harm them. |

Dori's trainer and vet are big advocates of wet food. Dogs love it and a high quality food is fine. I'm not a fan of free feeding as I need to know how much Dori is eating. If you feed dry, try a little grated cheese on top. It seems to be a misconception that dry food cleans teeth. |
Just keep feeding the wet food for a while, no harm done. In a few weeks, mix some dry in and if he eats it, ok, if not, try again in another couple weeks |
You can also try adding a SMALL amount of hot water to the dry kibble and mix it well- it creates a "gravy". Lex loves her food prepared this way |

Good advise above, keep feeding him the wet food if that is what he will eat. It is more important right now to make sure he eats and regular small meals throughout the day. Its good that you have nutri-cal. Keep that on hand in case he has an episode. Did your vet teach you how to recognize if he is low on blood sugar? |
You could try to sprinkle a little parmesan cheese on it. "Puppies 12 weeks old will have most of their 28 baby teeth and may have their first 2 to 4 adult front teeth, called the incisors. Over the next three months, your puppy will be getting in all of his adult teeth. Because they are entering an active “teething” stage, they will want to chew. Provide lots of safe chew toys. Begin the first steps toward brushing their teeth by opening their mouths and looking or gently touching their teeth. Make each event positive." It's possible he could be starting the teething stage. They are all individuals and do develop at their own pace. I don't really know. However, it is possible he just doesn't "like" the food you want him to eat. There are many quality dry foods with small kibble. You may want to try something else. I would still let him have wet food in the meantime. He needs to eat and eat well. |
