Question about Dewclaws Hey Everyone Gotta a question about Dewclaws Our last Yorkie had his removed, tail cropped and with our two new rescue Yorkies - Jagger has both dewclaws removed and his tail cropped. Jackson also has his tail cropped, and 1 dewclaw removed but he also still has 1. Just wondering if this is normal, maybe they forgot to remove 1 and what to do about it. So far it is not bothering him, but we don't have experience with dewclaws, we have had him groomed twice, so the claw is clipped but want to make sure he doesn't hurt himself. Does anyone else's Yorkies have a dewclaw or both? Is there any special care needed? Thanks |
My last Yorkie had one dewclaw. When I finally noticed, I called the breeder and she said they just missed it. She lived 18 years with it...no problems. You just need to remember to clip that nail. :) My little Zoey has both dewclaws, which I am careful to clip when I do the rest of her nails. I think they only remove them for aesthetic reasons, and maybe to eliminate the possibility of catching them on something... |
When I got Mikki she had her dewclaws. When I took her in to get fixed, the vet called me and recommended having them removed. Since she was already under, I went ahead and had it done. Her dewclaws were curling back and going toward her skin. I think that is why he wanted to remove them. My groomer also agreed with the vet. I do think the dewclaw catching on something is one of the big concerns. You might ask your vet to see what he/she recommends. |
Callie has dewclaws and she ripped her dew claw off some how outside and the nail came off and exposed a lot of her vein and nail.They had to sedate her and cut them back. If she ever has to or when she has to get a dental cleaning I am really thinking about having her dewclaws removed. |
My boy has both dewclaws, 5 years old, and he is in long coat. We don't have a problem with them. You just have to clip them regularly just like you do with their nails on the paws. I personally would not have them removed past the first few days of birth unless they are causing physical pain/problems From what I've learned is an amputation in an adult because it is formed bone, whereas in a puppy it hasn't formed yet. I don't know how it feels in a dog, but I recently experienced a partial amputation of a bone and it hurt like.... ***$&^&%!!! :( just my opinion, but i wouldn't put my dog through it unless medically necessary |
Sometimes dewclaws are not removed correctly and they do grow back........Rusty has one that did, and I keep a close check on it. It got caught once in my wedding rings....not pretty and not fun! |
Thanks everyone! I make sure that it is clipped and will ask the vet's advice next time we go to him. When he was neutered in November, he had a dental done and needed an antibiotic, so I'm glad it wasn't done then. Hopefully, we have no problems as it doesn't seem to bother him, but we will definitely keep an eye on it. It's weird seeing as it's just one, but that's what he has. |
