Recommendations for Toothpaste, dental care and Shampoo/ cleaning? I have a 14 week old yorkie mix. He's a handfull. I was wondering what you all recommend for dental care? I was thinking of just getting the Four Paws toothpaste? How about the liquids you add to the water or chew toys? greenies? Also for shampooing I was wondering how often you do that? I have to take him to a lot of places where the homeowners require he smell "good" etc. So I was wondering if it would be Ok to wash him at least once a week? Also how about dry shampooing and wipes? I bought some natural bamboo face wipes. Would Four Paws Magic coat with oatmeal be a good shampoo? It says it's good for dry skin etc Would you recommend a conditioner? Anything natural or home remedies also recommended since I'm on a budget and like homeopathic treatements too thanks! Thanks for advice. |
As far as toothpaste, I use CET and like it the best (so does Jackson). I use beef flavored. Our new favorite shampoo is Chris Christensen :) I bought the trial kit so it came with the shampoo, conditioner, thickener, and spray. :) Jackson typically gets bathed once every 2 weeks, but once a week is fine. |
I also like Chris Christensen and Yorkie Splash and Shine for shampoo/conditioner. To me Yorkie Sheen is the best detangler I have found. And it smells awesome!! Nice for those in between baths. I do give my girls baths once a week. I like a clean smelling Yorkie! ;) Here is the link for Yorkie Splash and Shine and Yorkie Sheen. I like CET toothpaste too! I use the Vanilla Mint. Her teeth look great so far! I bathe Taycie every 5-10 days. But I usually average about once a week. I currently use Epi-Soothe Shampoo and Conditioner I bought from my vet. She has really bad allergies and all my super good smelling stuff was making things worse:( She is able to tolerate the Oatmeal John Paul Pet and I use this sometimes too. I really like Chris Christensen too when I tried it.... if only she wasn't so sensitive because it made her coat look fabulous. Other shampoo/conditioner brands you could look into are Vellus, Biogroom, Espree. |
We use CET as well for toothpaste. We use the Yorkie splash & shine and the Yorkie sheen. We also like Minksheen shampoo at times. Pet silk top knot gel is good for putting up the top knot, too. I also really like Coat Handler as a comb out spray/leave in conditioner. Good luck ! |
Thank you for the advice. This is making life so much easier as a new puppy owner. There are so many products etc. So what websites do you use to purchase your products? Any recommendations on that? (especially ones that are cheaper ;)) |

I guess for anything. Even a site that sells food, toys, crates and other supplies. Just looking for a deal :) |
We like Chris Christensen Day to Day Shampoo and Conditioner; Yorkie Splash and Shine; Bio-groom protein lanolin shampoo and silk conditioner. We like Bio-groom ear cleaner (have been using that for years). For toothpaste, we also use CET enzymatic toothpaste. We use vanilla mint, poultry, and recently tried the malt flavor. Each of my dogs has his/her own favorite. We use a toddler toothbrush and we sterilize it weekly in the microwave and replace it often. |
I like CET toothpaste and they also have chew. I use pethead shampoo and I love it. I bathe Callie any where from every week to every 2 weeks it just depends how dirty she is, what she is doing, and where she is going. |
I should have added that yes, it is fine to wash her once a week. We use to wash every week but now that the coats are long, we have to do it once every 5 days. |
Also, Thanks so much everyone. So it is OK to wash them once a week or more! Other dog owners have told me no, but I'm guessing they have different types of fur and not the hair of a yorkie. My Aunt with German Shepherds actually told me not to do it as much as once every 2 months! (that would be a stinky dog) |
I haven't been able to bathe Susie since August as she goes mental when wet rubbing herself everywhere to get dry and that has caused her to collapse, since she has congestive heart disease and an enlarged heart that could kill her if she gets too excited or stressed, we decided to only use dry shampoo, she sometimes smells a bit greasy but as she might die if I bathed her decided that the best policy would be to not bathe her and have a smelly dog rather than a dead one. The dry shampoo does work though and she smells quite nice when done. |
