Since you are still in the process of looking for a puppy, you should seriously consider saving up to have an emergency fund before buying one. As Taylor said, the insurance plans are great, but you do have to pay up front and wait to be reimbursed. Care credit can help, but it's no substitute for an emergency fund.
Banfield Hospitals don't have the greatest reputations around here, but I do like the idea of the monthly "wellness plans" that are offered. Many private vet offices are now offering something very similar. The one I have for Cali through our vet covers all the well check visits, immunizations and spay. However, it doesn't cover the sick visits, heart worm and flea preventatives and so on. Those can add up pretty quickly.
There have been other threads regarding the cost of care for a healthy yorkie the first year you have them. It seemed to average about $1500 -$2000 between vet visits, food, grooming and so on. It can easily go up from there if you are unfortunate enough to get a pup with an illness. |
