The CET site has ingredient lists. It rings a bell...

Well, their site isn't cooperating, so:

It's beefhide except for the veggie ones.

If you are with pup and they aren't really getting anything off, then it is very minimal risk. Even being in the same room though, I found that not to be enough for Ellie. She had gotten a large piece off of rawhide and swallowed it even though I was right there trying to get it from her. It sticks in their mouth quite well. And that soggy/stickiness probably isn't favorable to the esophagus or perhaps even the trachea.

The only thing allowed here is Nylabone under supervision.

Bacteria collecting on the chewed ends. They seem to last longer than bully sticks, so they sit around longer.

Also most rawhides come from China don't they? That alone would make me not give them. I've had a hard time before looking for bullys not from China.

I don't give rawhides in other forms and just recently started giving the CET chews with the okay from the veterinary dentist. I feel pretty safe with them. I haven't noticed them to get really gross and goopy like other rawhides have; Jackson choked on one around 6 months of age and really scared the crap out of me. They tend to get real soggy and then they try to swallow them and they get stuck in the throat. We grew up with a Golden who used to inhale them and they would come out in her poop, it was pretty gross. They never digested, would come out as is.

I'm pretty sure they are just not as digestible, if at all. I'm not a fan of rawhides but the CET chews are pretty thin (even the large size, which is what we use for 16lb Jackson) and don't seem to be a big issue because Jackson eats them slowly. I do think it's more of a problem when you have a dog who enjoys swallowing big pieces, it sits in the stomach for days before digesting fully.

I think that some dogs might be ok with them, but Rocco is a crazy chewer so that's also why I pass on the CET chews. I can't even find a Nylabone that he doesn't chew to pieces (and swallow)...he goes through bully sticks like nobody's business; the himalayan chews are the only thing I've found that are a bit of challenge for him. I even tried an antler and was horrified when he managed to break SPLINTERS off of it :eek:. Just over 8lbs, but a jaw like a pit bull...:p

Yes, I wouldn't allow him to chew it without me holding it, he's a little too enthusiastic, and I believe he would bite off more than he could swallow.

I buy a really skinny kind, and throw it away after each use, you could cut off the ends or nuke them if you were worried about bacteria, and wanted to use them more than once. Target sells some from Mexico and some from China. I don't know if the ones from Mexico are any safer.

LOL I'm with you there. I make it a habit to only buy stuff my pack will eat that is made in the US. While not perfect, at least you would think the standards would be higher.

Although, I have been giving them this peanut butter bone thing from a brand called Pur Love, made in the US. The other night Smokey was gagging and coughing up a fit in the middle of the night, and threw up a bit. I turned on the light and saw a piece of the PurLove bone, about 1/2" long and halved lengthwise. I hadn't given them any of those bones since two days prior! :eek: And those are all food product. So I'm not giving those anymore either. So frustrating!

Wow, that scary, are you sure he hadn't taken a piece and hidden it? Could it really last that long? I did see some rawhides that were made in the U.S., but these are quite a bit thicker than the ones I have. No, Smokey devours anything I give him. He's not a hider. These are about as thick as a carptener's pencil but square, not rectangular, if that makes sense. But they are flexy. I think we are just safer with the Himalayan chews.

Was just going to post an update on Gizmo with the CET chews. He seems to be doing okay on them. No upset tummy, and it's kind of his cool down at night. I also hold them to make sure they're chewed and not gulped.
Also, his breath is starting to smell not so....Fishy. So, so far so good!:thumbup:

Even the tiniest bit of chewing on rawhide makes Levi throw up. I wonder how he would do with CET chews. :confused:

It sounds like some are made of rawhide and would make her throw up. Maybe you could try the veggie chews?

CET chews (other than the veggie-dent) are rawhide...just treated with antiseptic to make mouth smell fresh.

Sounds like they are a no-go for us! Are the veggie ones supposedly good for teeth, too? I've been pretty bad about keeping chews around for the little man lately. I need to look into some new ones.
