Help Please - Food Allergy? My girls (who are 18 months old) have Royal Canin dry food available to them throughout the day and at night I feed them a container of wet dog food (Old Roy or Caesar) mixed with white meat chicken. They seem to do fine except, I think, when I feed them the filet mignon flavor of the Caesar food. I finally realized what might be happening when my baby threw up 4 times last night and was still heaving this morning (after eating it last night). My other baby had hiccups all night long. Has anybody else had a problem like this? Could they have a food allergy to a particular flavor of dog food? |
It could be an intolerance to the food. If you have been feeding it for awhile, it could have been a bad batch, lack of ingredient consistency that led to excessive fat and made things angry in there. If your pup is still heaving this morning, it is time to see the vet. Yorkies dehydrate very quickly, so it's best to get right in. Also, in some cases, food needs to be withheld. So a vet opinion is important. Wet food is not necessary. How about just using the Royal Canin? |
Thanks for the reply. I called the vet and they said to keep her off food for today and re-introduce a bland diet (rice and chicken) tonight in small amounts and monitor her. I just feel like they don't eat enough of the dry food - they always scarf the wet food at night and they seem skinny to me even though they're 7 lbs. Maybe I'll just do rice and chicken at night instead of processed food. |
Lean chicken and rice is okay for upset tummies, but feeding it long term (3++ weeks) can cause some problems because it is not nutritionally balanced for dogs. If this is going to be more than ten percent of their diet long term, you could get a chicken and rice recipe formulated for them to make sure they are getting everything they need (the adult chicken and rice recipe on petdiets.com would probably be a good choice). Alternatively, you could choose a canned food of higher quality. I assume their fecals are negative? Bloodwork good (no medical reason for them being skinny)? Also, are you sure they are skinny or are they just lean and healthy? |

Its probably the caesars because its pretty rich I have given it to mine in the past. I would try just giving the royal canin and see where your at. They dont need a wet food but mine do like it so I do give it at breakfast but it is trial and error finding one |
Thanks everybody. Guess I'll just stay with the Royal Canin and give them chicken & rice on cold nights so they can have something warm and wet. I appreciate the input. |
I agree w/ Ellie May, too. :) If you want to give wet food, maybe find a different kind, with less ingredients and less fat, etc. I usually give Jackson a bit of canned (Right now - Weruva canned food) with his breakfast and I find that less than a spoonful is enough; also, I pour a bit of hot water over it and give it a little stir and he loves it! I actually really like canned food (less preservatives, less fillers, more moisture, etc) but it would be way too expensive to feed my 16lb solely canned. Plus the added convenience of kibble is nice. |
