Grooming - Good Detangler/Brush? So I need to get Geno groomed very soon and this time around he's going for his first real grooming appointment. The last 2 times we took him, they did a puppy groom where they just got him used to getting bathed, dried, cut nails, and trimmed around the face, paws, legs, and behind. Well the last time we took him, he was very uncomfortable with a lot of it so we have been kind of putting off his grooming because we are worried about his big appointment but we really cannot put off any longer cause his fur is getting really long. We want to make the appointment easy on him so we decided to brush him all out ourselves the day before we take him. He's a little more cooperative with us when we brush him opposed to the groomer. The problem is, his hair is reall matted on his belly. Is there a good detangler or brushes that you would recommend for us to make it easier on us and on Geno? Also, anyone else have problems with their dog at the groomer? and how did you get them to become more comfortable with the experience? |
I think the best way to get them comfortable at the groomer, is to first make them completely comfortable with being brushed at home, by you. If you are not brushing every day, starting that would be a good thing, this will get him used to it, and keep any matts/tangles at bay. The tangles on the tummy are probably the most sensitive area. I always keep the tummys trimmed short. Cowboy magic is a good detangler for pupppy coat. Also, if the hair is somewhat thin on his tummy, you can use corn starch on dry coat and just work the tangles out with your fingertips. The wooden pin brush from Chris Christianson is good on small tangles and much more tolerable for the pups :) |

I've been using the madan brushes and combs. He's a little frightened by the big comb so we used the brush on him tonight and that worked well but we still only got half of him combed and we still need to brush out his legs. For the wooden pin brush, what size pins did you get? geno isn't too long he's just really fluffy. |
I like to use a dab of PetSilk Silk Serum (Mimimomo sells it on her website, toplinepet.com) on tangles. Then I use the tail of a rat tail comb to break up the tangle (always point and pull away from your pup), or I use the Chris Christensen buttercomb. For general brushing, I use the ISINIS brush. If the boys are super clean, I use the Madan brushes. Depends on the coat and the type of tangles, but sometimes washing and conditioning really well first helps. That is for what I call the "dirty tangles." Other times, you definitely want to fix things before getting it wet because bathing can tighten a tight tangle or mat. It's all trial and error and lots of tools. :) |
Do you have clippers? Most folks I know me included shave the belly area. If you have then have your hubby hold your boy against his just opening up the belly area for you. Ie the back of your dog is nestled agains his chest. Then you just zip through the belly hair. I do like the CC wooden pin brush. Also Isinis and Madam. If you don't have the clipper, I'd try to demat the legs. They will likely shave the belly and that is super easy on the dog. |
yeah im worried about his legs too cause those are really matted. might try giving him a bath on Friday and then work out some of the knots on his legs. He was actually being really good when I was holding him on his back last night while my boyfriend brushed his tummy. We got about close to half of it unknotted but we decided not to do the whole thing just so he won't freak out. The thing with his personality is that he's very skittish to begin with. He's just like his real father who is also very skittish. He scurries around like a little mouse as if something is gonna snatch him up real quick lol He's very hard to pick up and only wants held when he wants held which isn't too often so forcing him on his back is sometimes a challenge. We were surprised he cooperated last night as long as he did. |

For now, I'd cut off all the tangles, it will grow back. You don't want him to associate grooming time is ouch time. What I do w/their legs is lift up all the hair w/one hand while holding onto their leg. Then w/the other hand, brush downwards in layers starting from the bottom. Brushing this way ensures that all the hair is smoothed out. |
Morgan hair grows so fast I have to get him groomed every 4 weeks or he looks like a rag mop and his hair tangles up so i use a pin brush he does not seem to mind it too bad |
