Are we feding our Dexter enougjh I tried reading the forum, but I did not find out for sure. Our Dexter is 5 1/2 mos old, 6lbs. We give him 1/2 cup of kibble split for 3 meals. Is that the proper amount, his gobbles the food up and acts likes he is still hungry? TIA |
I think he might need a little more. Pups (under 8-12 months) need more than adults. Also depends on the food. Some are more nutrient and calorie dense. Max was eating 3/4 cups at that age and weight of a food that had about 380 calories/cup. What brand food do you feed? |
I start by following the directions on the bag. Each type and manufacturer is different. Then if they look like they are losing weight, I increase the amount, or if gaining too much, I decrease the amount. As your pup is growing, he will gain weight, but you don't want him overweight. |
Thanks for the replies. We are using eagle pack. The bottom of the box says 1 1/2 cups. That's a lot more than the 1/2 cup the breeder told us to give him. What do you folks suggest? This food says for puppies. He is almost 6 months. How long is a Yorkie considered a Pup? |
I would follow the food package directions. Cailee is 6 months old and is 4 pounds. She eats 1/2 - 3/4 each day (spread over 3 meals) She is eating Taste of the Wild and for example, it says that pups 5-7 months (and weighing 3-5 pounds) should eat 2/3-1 cup but when they become adults (over 12 months) they should eat 1/3-1/2 cups. |
I would do what the package says. |
Packages are often way over-estimates. But for a puppy, I think it'd be hard to over-feed. You'll have to watch portion sizes more as an adult. My 3 year old 16lb healthy active Jackson gets fed 3/4 cup per day of a food with 391 kcal/cup (along with getting a few treats throughout the day). |
Here is a dog food calculator maybe it will help. Dog Food Calculator |
Our 4year old female spayed yorkie gets 1/2 cup of Royal Canine SO per day. We give her carrot treats during the day and the vet has told me that is the correct amount. |

I give her 3/4 of a cup, royal canin dry food. |
I actually go by the size of his bowl... about a half cup of kibble, and 3 ounces of canned or diced up roll (Dick VanPatten's) 2x a day. Smokey eats his fill and walks away. He also gets snack.. a piece of cheese or some sweet potato. Seems to be okay.. he is 7 months and looks/carries like he now weighs 7ish lbs. 6.6 three weeks ago at the vet. I've had dogs who ate until they would burst, but not him. Smokey DINES and stops when he is full... wish I could say the same about me :>( Every dog is different, so again, use your instincts and good judgement to come up with what is appropriate for your dog. |
