Ok so my Daisy has had a very long history of food allergies and intolerances. Just when she does well on a food or food combo, something goes wrong. Liver gets angry or intestines get angry or she scratches or she bites at herself etc.

So today I did a consult with a board certified vet nutritionist as I have done in the past to see if a new diet is warranted because right now her intestines decided to be angry and she has gas and is burping on a commercial food she has otherwise been tolerating nicely. :eek: She also has some abnormal kidney issues that I wanted to address now before the issue gets ahead of us.

The recommendations were -
1. Kangaroo. --> I said, I love my dog, but kangaroo I won't do.
2. Rabbit --> See #1
3. Calamari --> Sure, I'm italian, why not, add a little olive oil and we'll all eat it.

So, after 30 mins of in depth discussion, we are going back to her home cooked diet with variation. Right now she is eating chick peas. She does best on a vegetarian diet.

She refuses to eat out of a bowl or plate! With kibble, it wasn't a big deal to let her just eat it off a placemat or even the tile floor (cleaned first of course). But chick peas? Kinda messy. Finally, she won and ate up her chick peas. I am hoping for some sleep tonight, but I know that I could face a bout of bloody diarrhea or vomiting.

I would do anything for my Daisy. Except Kangaroo. The part about it being "dark and gamey" just sealed the deal. Can't do it. There was something about someone else could cook it and I could order it, but honestly, dark and gamey got to me and I shut down.

Someone tell me kanagaroo smells wonderful to cook and I'm being silly???? I know that the chick pea thing might not work, and I might have to cave. I can't even stand to look at lamb or dark meat turkey.

Ugh.

I don't think I could do it either honestly. But possibly if someone else was cooking it I could handle it. The calamari I could handle, but thats about it. Where exactly would you even get kangaroo?

You are being silly! :D Try it! It can't be worse than tripe! If it works for your Yorkie, it's more than worth it.

ETA Rabbit is no big deal. Much like chicken but with far less fat.

Well, when I get to go on my dream vacay to the land down under, I'll bring Daisy back a treat.

I couldn't do it either unless Ellie was literally dying and that's all that would save her. Couldn't do rabbit either. Could barely to calamari.

I'm sorry you have to be on edge tonight. :( I hate these food switches. Pretty much have to have the vet on alert to have fluids ready.:rolleyes:

LOL. Yes, I have heard that rabbit cooks like chicken. I think I honestly could do rabbit.

And, I'll have you know that I have actually cooked tripe a couple of times. I gagged and would not taste my own cooking.

I was told I could buy the kangaroo and cook it myself or use a company that has an industrial kitchen who would prepare the diet the veterinarian created and ship it to me. I'm hoping and praying that the chick pea thing works.

Kangaroo???? :eek: I just don't know!! But, you are right, if it works for my very difficult little darling then I would do anything. But, I'm ordering it if it comes to that. And buying a new microwave for outside to heat it out in the yard.

Yep, definitely on the edge tonight. She's so far doing well. Barking up a storm, wanting to go out on the porch, etc. But you know as well as I that could all change with a wag of a tail or a blink of an eye. Got a 9:15 AM scheduled for Barney so if I have to bring another I'll surprise my vet!

BTW, I did locate some kangaroo dog treats online. If I have to do this, I was thinking I could ease my way in........ I'll order extra for Ellie!!!:animal-pa

I suppose if my dog's health depended on it, I could do it, but it would be hard. Although I eat meat, I could never eat a kangaroo. My father brought home a kangaroo skin from Australia in the 1970s and I am so glad that thing is gone. It would bother me today.

I pray Daisy does well with her new diet and that you can get this sorted out for her. Tell her to stop challenging you like this! ;):)

I'm trying to picture a dog eating calamari, lol. My boys would probably sniff and lick it, then play with it for a bit and look at me like I am crazy. :p

Kangaroo smells wonderful to cook :D Seriously! I don't think it tastes "gamey" ...it's more like steak.

And lamb...oh my....that's my absolute favourite meat.

Calamari....eeww...wouldn't touch the stuff :p

With how little meat you'd have to cook for a yorkie, why not give the kangaroo a try...at least once :)

She said she's been working with a company with an industrial kitchen and they prepare diets made by the vets and ship them to owners for freezing or some shelf stable. Exotics are kind of their thing. I didn't ask the name of the company because I was traumatized by the kangaroo thing.

By the way, I realized I spelled kangaroo wrong in my post. What an idiot.

I can't stand lamb. I eat indian food often and they always try to push the lamb on me but I just don't care for it. I do like calamari - in RI it is breaded and fried in olive oil with hot pepper rings and served with marinara sauce. It's so delicious.

I'm getting hungry LOL
