Benadryl question So I got my Geno some Benedryl kids but my boyfriend got the tablets not the liquid. Does it make a difference? Geno doesn't really seem to get too knocked out from it. I know when we used to give it to my mom's dog, she would fall asleep in like 15 minutes. We give this to Geno for allergies btw, not to knock him out. lol |
As long as its not the adult strength tablets. They have the same ingredient. Just watch the dosage. The liquid is usually 12.5mg/5ml of diphenhydramine while the tablets are usually 25mg. |
Yep they are kid's strength. The vet told us 1mg for every pound of body weight and the tablets say they are 12.5mg per tablet so we give him a quarter of a tablet. These tablets don't even seem to phase him. |

My dog Daisy isn't phased by benadryl either. It did little for her allergies and didn't make her sleep so she itched all night with or without benedryl. I hope it works for Geno. |
Why would you give the dog benadryl? |

yes my vet recommended it for my bichon's allergies. |
yes, my Prada takes benadryl in the spring and summer for seasonal allergies.. hugs, |
Yes children's liquid or tabs or even the adult tabs can be used. Just watch the strength. Unless your pup is very small, wouldn't 12.5/4 be an underdose? Unless your pup is 3 pounds of course.. |

Same here with my Bichon. |
Cailee was 3-1/2 mo old when we got her ( and 2.5 pounds). After 2 weeks with us, she started reverse sneezing. I took her to the Vet (before we were sure it was reverse sneezing). She confirmed what we believed to be reverse sneezing. She explained the usual causes, one of which was allergies. She told us it wouldn't hurt to try Childrens Benedryl to see if it helped her. It did. But we just gave her 1 ml and it worked. It calmed the reverse sneezing and she slept better. We haven't had to use it lately (she's 6-1/2 mo old now) but I'll definately try it again if she starts a reverse sneezing episode. |
I use Benadryl all the time for my Yorkies allergies. She cant take steroids anymore and Clemastine doesnt seem to work very well. I have a heavy Yorkie, almost 10 lbs. so I use the adult strenegth and cut it almost in half. I eyeball it so its usually a little less than half. (about 10 mg) it doesnt sedate her but does seem to make her sleep a little better, at least initially. She will still wake up scratching but usually I can get her back to sleep easier. I pray it doesnt even stop working because its all I have now. My only concern is how long I can keep using it. |
