Should dew claws be removed or not? I was looking at ads, and this breeder doesn't believe in removing dew claws. What do ya'll think? |
Rizzo has his, and he also has his tail full -- it's illegal to alter a dog in that way in Europe. It's not bad, but they are really difficult to keep trimmed. You have to angle the nail clippers in just the right way to get to them. There is a risk of the nail getting caught on something and getting torn which could be extremely painful but it's a small risk. I wouldn't say that there is anything wrong with the breeder just based on that you should look at other details to make sure she isn't just a byb that decided to skip on the whole claw removal/tail docking to save $$. |
Thanks... I knew that Smokey had his dew claws but I never really checked them. Not pleased to find that although he's been to the groomer twice, they have yet to be clipped. Grrrrr. Shouldnt this be automatic? None of my greyhounds had their dew claws removed and luckily, we never had an accident. |
WEll something I learned last month when attending a weekend seminar, Training the Canine Athlete; dewclaws at least the front ones for sure, are actually utilized in certain aspects of agility (think the teeter totter, the boardwalk), in flyball turns, etc. There is some lovely slo mo action we looked at and you could really see that the dogs were spreading their paws and using the dew claw on the front to help with balancing and turning. |
I read a few things that said dew claws are necessary for a few things but I personally do not like them. Callie some how outside months ago got her dew claw ripped off and her vein was hanging out and the vet had to sedate her and cut it back. My moms beagle has ones that grow crazy fast and have grown into her foot and had to be cut by the vet and then she had a small infection now my dad is very careful to check her dew claws. |
Personally, I do not like dew claws either. My cat had dew claws, and they were hard to trim, and if they got too long they grew into his foot in a circle. That could cause problems. My yorkie Tatiana already had her dew claws removed by her breeder when I got her. Her tail was already docked, too. |
Do a search on YT, and you'll find many threads where someone posted that the dewclaw ripped off, and it can be serious. Just make sure you keep the nails clipped. I personally wouldn't want a breeder who made this decision. |
