Tuna ???? Bad Daddie that I am, I forgot to pick up more wet food yesterday and gave him Tuna packed in water this morning along with his kibble, which he is lapping up like crazy. Any problem with this as part of his diet ? If not, should I buy it packed in oil ? BTW, I am feeding him Dick VanPatten's venison and sweet potato kibble and wet, which was prescribed by my canine gastroenterologist for my elderly grayhound's chronic diarrhea. Did the trick, but she passed on from mammary cancer right after we got Smokey to keep her (and us) company when my elderly whippet passed from congestive heart failure this summer. Many thousands of dollars and much heartache later, I am not feeling very confident in my own judgement these days and that's pretty much the reason I joined YT:cry: |
I would be a little afraid of the amount of sodium in the canned tuna. It may not be so bad if you rinsed it off really well, but I wouldn't think that it would be a really good substitute for the canned food. |
I've read that occasional tuna is okay, but not a regular item because of the mercury. You should never use the tuna packed in oil, way too much fat for a yorkie. The problem with giving pure protein, the dog won't be getting other nutrients it needs such as calcium, dog foods have a complete and balanced diet, and if you give them people food they will turn their noses up at the dog food. I wouldn’t give more than a tablespoon of protein whether it’s tuna, chicken or beef with the kibble. |
Well I doubt that one time is going to really hurt anything. I too have had to improvise when discovering we're out of dog food. I think the tuna in water would be better than the tuna in oil though. I also have heard that giving tuna occasionally is ok but not to give regularly due to mercury content. |
i do this on a limited basis and give them mashed sweet potatoes and lil tuna (packed in water only) and sprinkle cheese and micro for 10 secs. they love it as a special treat here and there. |
I would feed sardines packed in water with no salt added before I would feed tuna, due to the Omega 3's. As was mentioned previously, feed the water packed tuna and be sure to compare sodium levels. Anything that is considerably over 100mg per serving, I would avoid. The sardines I feed, which are packed in spring water, show to be 150mg of sodium per serving for comparison. I wish I could obtain a lower level of sodium, but that is as low as I can find at the grocery store I frequent. |
I just add water to the dry food to make it soft, and maybe a little bit of Parmesan cheese (like 1/16 of a teaspoon) if I run out of wet food. Chicken or ground beef (no fat, bones or skin and no seasonings) and plain white rice (1:1) can be used for a day or two if you run out of dry too. And never give onions, raisins, grapes, gravies, bones, fat, anything with artificial sweetners (especially xylitol).... see the article in the YT Library.... here's a link to the entire YT library: YorkieTalk Yorkshire Terrier Library - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community No table food, Dog food only is the rule. Yorkies' tummies and digestive systems are delicate and one can make them very sick and have to take them to the vet alot if a proper diet isn't followed. There is a bunch of foods they can have in moderation, like yogurt, rice, some fruits and vegetables, but that is a topic for another day. :D |
Tuna won't hurt at all, but in moderation. I use to give it to my girls packed in oil (pouches not cans though) during the winter once a week, and in water the rest of the time. About three years later, they were allergic to all fish and poultry. Now the vet. thinks they are allergic to beef and said if I could find wild game such as venison, rabbit and such, it would be much better for them. Now I guess we should move to Montana and have my husband start hunting. hehehe!! |

There is nothing wrong with tuna packed in WATER. Too much of any treat can unbalance the diet, so be careful. My girl used to eat tuna 2-3x daily as her sole protein source (under a nutritionist's supervision). |
