Ever To Old For Vaccines? I haven't been here to participate in quite some time, but I do have a question. It would help if suggestions aren't repeated, it just makes it confusing. My dogs get their shots every year for rabies, parvo, distemper, parainfluenza, lepto, and a couple more. My dogs are very seldom taken anywhere. They are usually inside except to go out into a small fenced area to potty. Do they really need all these? And at what age to they really not need all these vaccinations? None of mine have never had any kind of reactions except for the small bump that some get with the rabies and then it goes away. Of course my Vet says they really should get them every year, but there are so many conflicting opinions. |
No, I don't believe in vaccines every year. Certainly not all the ones they have been given. Most vets now follow the protocol of every 3yrs for vaccines. However, I don't even believe every 3yrs is necessary. I like the Dr. Dodds vaccine protocol. Jackson did puppy vaccs (DHPP) at 8, 12 and 16 weeks. Then was given the rabies. Then at one year, he had DHPP booster and rabies booster. From here on out, I will most likely only give him rabies every 3yrs because it's required by law. I MAY get one more DHP booster at 4 years old (since that would have been 3 years since it's last) but not sure yet. I'd never do every year though. |
In our county in Indiana rabies is required every year. I prefer Dr Dodds protocol also, but still worry mostly about distemper and parvo, especially in our county. I wouldn't mind the every three years, but to get a titer is more expensive than the vaccines. |

The vaccine works for 3+ years. AAHA protocol calls for every 3 years. Most vets should be following this. If they are not, I'd question their motives in giving the vacs. |

There is no reason to give DHPP yearly. It is overvaccination and it isn't healthy. Obviously with rabies you have no choice because of your county. |
My vet is on the conservative side but when my first yorkie was older and started to get sick, he stopped the vaccines except for rabies when required by law. |
