How many procedures are to much? Brutus is getting fixed on Friday - also micro chipped, baby teeth pulled and dew claws removed (for his safety). This sounds like so much at one time to me, but I don't want him to be put out multiple times either. Ugh. The teeth thing I am concerned about because it looks like he has 8 that will have to go. Thoughts/Input? |
It would depend on what procedures are done. In my opinion what you have described doesn't sound like too much to me. |

I'm assuming the teeth that need extraction are baby teeth, and that usually does not cause any problems. How-ever judging on the extent of the surgery needed to remove the dew claws, I might elect to have this operation performed separately. |
I agree with Gemy. How attached are the dew claws? Other than that, I'd be fine with the neuter and teeth. Microchip literally takes one second. |
I'd do them all at once. The dewclaws would have to be an absolute necessity for me to do it at all though at this age. Usually they don't need to be removed. |
I would do all except the dew claws, like Gail said, it would be an amputation. My male who is 5 years old has his dew claws and he has never had an issue with them, and he is in a full coat. They need clipping but it is the same as having to clip their toenails anyway. Never any issues with his, i would never remove what they were born with especially if it is not medically necessary at this age(i am assuming he is a few months old now?) |
I agree with all of the above! |
The vet called today to confirm our appt for Friday. I told them we're leaving the dew claws on since we haven't had any issues with them. Brutus will be 6 mo. old on Sat. - I do have a question about the teeth. I had my own molars pulled as an adult and it was hard to eat hard food for a few days. Is it the same for pups? Will I need to put him on a full blown wet diet for a few days as he heals? |

Usually when baby teeth are pulled they can eat regular food, it isn't a really big deal. When adult teeth are extracted, there is more pain involved and yes, soft food is usually recommended. |

I was worried when Ziva had 7 baby teeth removed at the time of her spay, she is such a picky eater anyway- but it was actually better without the double teeth, The baby teeth must have just slid out- by the time we got her home that afternoon and looked the gums had already retracted and you could not even tell! she does have the most beautiful set of teeth now.The most important was to get her off the painkillers quickly, they really wiped her out and made her wobbly. |
