Plaque blast- safe? Effective? Hi fellow yorkie lovers:D I haven't been on here in quite some time- me and my yorkie Ralfie :aimeeyork have moved around quite a bit and life just seems to fly by. I'm hoping to become involved in the forums again and wanted to seek some advice from more experienced yorkie lovers. My little Ralfie has bad teeth. When he was neutered, he had to have his baby teeth pulled at the same time, since they did not fall out when his adult teeth grew in. Now, at the age of four, his teeth are starting to look bad. He has a lot of plaque build up and his breath is RANCID. I am hoping to avoid, or at least postpone, having to have his teeth cleaned under anesthesia (which is what my vet suggested). He's only five pounds, I don't want him to go through that. I found a product called plaque blast that is supposed to clear away the plaque and reveal pearly white teeth. My question is, is this a safe product? Does anyone have any experience or advice on this product? Thank you very much, any advice is greatly appreciated. Much love to all the yorkies and yorkie lovers out there!:animal-pa |
Honestly, it sounds like he needs a dental. Get a fresh start. Nothing is going to clean the teeth as good as the vet can while he is under. It could be affecting many other things (including their organs) and the teeth need be thoroughly cleaned along the gumline, etc. Anesthesia is really not a huge deal, so long as they are doing right. Jackson is 3 and just got his first dental -- once they got in there, they discovered a bad tooth that had infection, so they pulled that. They fixed up his over-bite problem he had with his canine tooth. They cleaned all the teeth. Now they look amazing and he feels SO much better, I can tell in his personality. They use isoflourane to put him under and we did pre-op bloodwork to make sure he was safe to go under. Just find a vet you trust, one that will explain everything to you. If the vet recommended a dental, then I would go with that recommendation. Then you can keep up with the teeth here on out. Brushing daily is soooo important, as I've learned. I've been training Jackson to "enjoy" it. I also purchased CET toothpaste, CET chews, and HealthyMouth. Other recommended products are OraVet and Petzlife. |
I agree with Brit. I also will add, after reviewing the "Plaque Blast" website, there is NO way I would ever purchase anything that would be ingested by my pet without reviewing the full ingredient list. I seem to be unable to find that on the site, and that alone is enough for me to pass on it, not to mention the before and after pictures are less than encouraging. Get a dental performed and keep up with your Yorkies' teeth. The risk of anesthesia is far less than the risk of prolonging existing bacteria and likely periodontal disease. Believe it or not, a toothbrush softened with some warm water will also clean teeth. The brushing action is key. |

Sounds like a dental is needed. |
Thank you so much for the feedback. I haven't used the plaque blast yet and I think part of me was wary of using it for a reason. I really appreciate you researching the ingredients tem_sat; I too couldn't figure out exactly what was in it and that was a red flag. I had a friend who's pet died unexpectedly under anesthesia and I have had a big fear of it ever since, but she lived in a different state and had a different vet. My vet is really great and I do trust him, so I guess I will schedule the dental. And thanks for the brushing advice from all of you especially Britster, I was not very good about keeping up with Ralfie's brushing up til now and its kind of too late to fix it myself. But from here on out I'm going to make sure I'm on top of his dental health. Thanks again for the great advice :D |

Let us know when you get it done!! I'll send you well wishes on that day, I know how scary it can be to drop them off and put them in someone elses hands. By the way, what I have been doing with Jackson, is bringing him into the bathroom every night w/ a few treats. I have been putting the toothbrush close to his mouth, but not actually brushing, and every time he opens his mouth voluntarily, he gets a click and a treat. I am conditioning him to me touching all over his mouth, putting the brush near it, etc. It seems to be working. It's been 1 week since his dental and he loves coming in the bathroom now! Next week I am going to begin brushing for real. |
Oh, I see you are in Maryland! If you were interested, I'd check out the Animal Dental Center in Annapolis. That is where I took Jackson and it may be more expensive that way, but they are AWESOME! I felt very very confident and safe leaving Jackson in their hands. |
