teeth cleaning My little Roscoe is about nine months old and I brush his teeth either every day or every other day. I was wondering though when they need a professional cleaning.:confused: I want to keep his teeth very healthy but the thought of him going under ansthesia honestly scares me:( So at what age and how old did you wait to get your baby professionaly cleaned? |
Do they look like there is any tarter or plaque build-up? I can't imagine most 9 month olds would have bad teeth, but I guess you never know. Genetics seem to play a large role, plus the amount of work you do at home. Brushing should really be done every day. I'm terrible at it. But my 3 year old just had his first professional dental today and I am going to be good from here on out. It's expensive, first of all, so I'm going to keep my in-home care up to par from now on to avoid too many more of these in the future (although his was extra expensive because he had other dental work that needed to be done). Some dogs need a dental every year. Some every six months. Some don't need them for years in between. It all just depends. I think having a vet check them every 6 months-one year is recommended and get their professional opinion. |
Zhoie has a very small mouth and she doesn't chew anything much. So much cleaning going on from chew sticks:( I had hers done at 1 yr, 2 yrs and she will be done again in Jan for 3 yrs. She does get tartar on the insides of her molers, so we don't really have much choice. It does terrify me, but it has to be done. |
I would think there would not be a specific age but that it depends on the dog, what they eat, if they chew bones and how much you brush there teeth. I would just ask your vet and wait until they recommend it. |
I don't know if there is a standard timeframe. My pup is almost 4 and has not yet needed a dental. Vet just checked his teeth last month, and we are good for awhile. I brush his teeth a few times a week, but honestly, his teeth have always looked great. He doesn't really get tarter buildup at all. Maybe for him it's just good genes and preventative care. |
