Allergy question So Geno has been crying while scratching again but this time he's crying when he scratches his face. He also rubs his whole body on the carpet every so often throughout the day. I really think he's got allergies which I would not be surprised about. It seems that yorkies are prone to them. What do you guys do for your baby's allergies? He doesn't seem to have any problems with his shampoo and conditioner we use, but my boyfriend's parents did give him a bath 2 weeks ago when we were away. Not sure if that could be it but they said he was crying when scratching before they bathed him. We are bathing him Friday so don't know if that'll change anything. He's also been nibbling at his back side. We don't take him out too often but he has been around other dogs so I guess it could be fleas/ticks. Can you look in their fur to see if they have ticks? What do they look like? |
Ticks usually bumped up under the skin. Poor baby. Gizmo has allergies and has a tendency to itch. We use special shampoo and conditioner that has hydocortizone in it, but he'll still itch every once in awhile. |
Yes these guys are prone to allergies...we have dealt with it for years..until you can find out what's affecting him,its perfectly safe to use Benadryl. The usual dosage is 1 mg per lb of body weight. We use the childrens fast melt tabs wrapped in a pill pocket. Or you can take him to the vet and they can give him an injection of Benadryl or a corticosteroid. I would try to continue to play the investigator to see what may be aggravating her. That could take some time....look into food,shampoos/conditioner,floor cleaners,detergents ect. |
Callie has allergies and one of her symptoms is itchy skin and then it will brake out in little bump that turn into sores. So our vet gave us Hydroxyzine and it works great and doesn't make her tired or anything. |
Riley has environmental allergies... and back in May he had a reaction to something he had walked over..... The vet said, with him being "8" lbs, I could give him 1/2 a benadryl twice a day..... |
Well I told our trainer that he cries when scratching his face and she said it could also be due to teething...I never thought of that but he does scratch his body on the carpet and nibble on his back side so I still think it's allergies. |
Charlie does the same thing. She is 6.75lbs and will occasionally cry when scratching her face and does do a good bit of itching. A benadryl tablet for a human adult is typically 25mg. I cut it into 1/4's and give her 6.25mg in the AM and then also in the PM. The vet also recommended putting fish oil over her food in the AM for allergies. We have done this along with using a veterinary shampoo every 2 weeks and it has minimized the symptoms. |
Is he a young puppy? Young pups don't really have allergies yet...so it makes me think it's something else. Have you inspected his ears, armpits, tummy, btwn paws and all that? |
He's going to be 6 months on November 27th. He had an ear infection 2 months ago that we got cleared up with some gel that the vet prescriped for us. His ears are pink and look good now. I haven't inspected his armpits, tummy, or between the paws. We need to brush him tonight so we'll take a look. He's been rubbing his back all over the carpet. He has been around other dogs so maybe it could be fleas or ticks. We don't give him flee/tick medicine because he's in an inside dog but the vet did recommend some different ones to us the last time we went. I think I might make an appointment and see what could be wrong. |

Food Allergy? You might try changing food. My Brandy has been eating Solid Gold for over a year, which has bison in it. She has had bad breath, so 3 days ago we changed to Nature's Variety Prairie Chicken Meal and Brown Rice Medley. She has been scratching ever since. I googled dog food allergy and it appears that this could be the problem. We are switching back to see if this makes a difference. I am hoping this is the problem. Hoping the same for you as this is an easy cure. |
Well he's been on the same puppy food since he even started eating puppy food and this just started not too long ago. I mean it may have developed into a food allergy but I don't know. |

Ok we just scheduled a vet appt for next friday so hopefully everything is ok. My boyfriend is taking him cause I have to work. My poor baby! :( |

Well we'll still look around his fur tonight but just knowing that our vet will closely inspect him next week makes us feel better. I mean even if he is too young to get allergies, our vet will hopefully be able to figure out why he's been so itchy. Peace of mind for sure! |

My eldest Shih Tzu has allergies & I had him tested several years ago. He also has chronic ear infections. :( It was just a simple blood draw that I recall. It was sent in & I received a list of environmental allergies (dust, pollen, grasses, trees, etc.) fabrics, foods, etc. They gave me quite a large list of dog foods that were "safe" for him to eat. He has SO many allergies that this is wonderful to have. I believe I paid around $250 for the test but it was well worth it IMHO. I tried the allergy injections, where you give them to them & it hopefully builds up their immunity to the allergens but after about 11/2 years I saw very little difference so I stopped them. The vet said it was kind of a long shot them working but like I said he has SO many. Fortunately, I have a very sweet dog that would lay down & roll over when it was time for his injections. Bless his little heart. |
Wow $250...thank god my boyfriend has his credit card lol I looked on his tummy, his ears, paws, back....didn't seem anything out of the ordinary. He licks his paws a lot as well which my mom's dog does and she has allergies really bad. We'll see what the vet says though. |
