Question about Spaying My babies (Bella & Gracie) are 7 months old now and are doing quite well. They had a very rough beginning though because when I got them at 12 weeks old they were malnourished, had mange & ear mites. It has been a very rough road to get them where they are now, but with a lot of coddling and trips to the vet they are so much better. I want to get them spayed but with all the problems they've had I am so afraid. They have not come into their first heat yet, which I believe is due to their rocky beginning. My vet says she believes they will be fine being spayed but I am just so afraid to do it right now. My husband wants to do it before they come into heat but again, I'm just so afraid. I have finally gotten them house broken, their tummies are finally doing good on their food and treats. Everything is going well and I'm just scared this will mess them all up again. What do you guys think? What would you do? Thanks for any input offered. |
I think they would be ok especially if your vet thinks they would be ok. Callie didn't take any steps back in her potty training after she was spayed and her tummy seemed to be ok. The three female dogs I had growing up didn't have any problems after being spayed that I can remember either. |
Kiko didn't have any problems or setbacks after her spay. If the vet says they are healthy enough for the surgery, go ahead and get it done. |
If your veterinarian says that they are okay to get spayed, then I would definitely get it done. I was super nervous the entire time when my baby was getting spayed... but I'm so thankful that I had it done early! |
I know how you feel -- I was terrified when I took Tallulah to be spayed. But every heat cycle a dog goes through increases her chances of getting mammary tumors later. Having lost the dog I grew up with (best dog in the history of the entire universe!) during her fourth surgery to remove mammary tumors, I will never risk another pet going through that. |
Well the girls were spayed yesterday and they are recovering quite well. Bella was feeling very bad last night and wouldn't eat and couldn't get comfortable. But at 12:15 am she decided she was hungry and she has been fine ever since. Gracie did great last night but has been sleeping all day. They gave me pain/anti-inflammatory meds to give them for 3 days and I think Gracie is just sleepy from that. They are eating and drinking very good. They each had to have some baby teeth removed. Is this something that is normal for Yorkies? My last little Yorkie we rescued at age 3 and she had to have baby teeth removed. I've never had any other breed that this happened to. Very strange. Thanks to everyone that persuaded me that this was not going to set them back. I am so glad it's just about over and that they did so well. :D |

Im glad it went well. Its actually very common for yorkies and other small breeds to have retained baby teeth. No worries there. |
I am glad they are ok and everything went smoothly . What kind of stitches did the vet use ? Do you have to take them back in to have the stitches removed? Do you have to watch them so they do not chew the stitches? I remember YT'ers suggested putting them in a Onesie to allow them to heal better. i am nervous about spaying , and know it needs to be done. Did your vet do bloodwork on your girls before the spay? Are they eating a little bit now? Sorry for so many questions , I am curious to know what to expect with my dogs. |
