Opinions needed: switch food or deal with runny eyes? I hate to ask yet another dog food question, but here it is: Rocco is on Wellness small breed and does very well with one exception: teary eyes and eye boogers. After doing some research, I'm guessing it's an allergy to the grain in the food, so I am considering switching him to Taste of the Wild (lamb formula) kibble. My question is this: if it were your furbutt, would you tolerate the fairly minor issue of runny eyes/boogers or risk a switch that may or may not be better for him in the long run. I might add that Rocco tends to have a sensitive belly when he gets into things he shouldn't (eg, dropped brownie crumbs, a tasty stick or worm, etc.) |
have you tried adjusting his water? i used a recommendation from another YT member about using Gerber baby water with my pup and in 2 weeks her eyes are so much clearer! |

oh ok , just a thought. Its $1 a jug at walmart and it seems to have helped with lola's eyes. but if it is the food, then perhaps see what a little does for his tummy, slowly add it in and then move over to it, but if the stomach upset is happening its not worth the pain in claening the eyes contantly. id' rather that than your pup not feelnig well |
I would do a switch..... Riley gets Aquafina bottled water [at the suggestion of a co-worker who has a Maltese.....] and he gets Taste Of The Wild food..... His eyes are pretty clear. |
Cailee has runny eyes. I understand that can be a common occurence when teething, which she is. It could also be allergies -- to most anything-- according to my vet. She was originally on Royal Canin and now on Blue Buffalo puppy. Her eyes aren't quite as bad but I'm not sure I could attribute it to food. I also give my puppies bottled water. Cody has never had real runny eyes just an occasional eye booger. |
I was feeding Natural Balance Reduced Calorie, and TinkerBelle had runny eyes and was biting her feet a lot and scratching. It has both grain and chicken in it, and I was afraid she might be allergic to either the grain or the chicken; so I switched to Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diet (LID) fish and sweet potato (no grain or chicken). It seemed like the foot biting has stopped for the most part, the scratching stopped, and the watery eyes quit being so watery, although they do still water a little bit. Not sure if it is the new food, but I did notice a difference when I switched her. |
My Taycie has horrible food allergies and a very touchy stomach. She is on a RX diet and within a 24 hour time period I noticed big change. Her eyes have always watered but the food has made the BIGGEST difference. I also use the gerber baby water.. her face is tear stained free her eyes don't run and she is doing fantastic. |
When I switched Jax to a grain-free food, his runny eyes/eye boogers decreased a LOT, but did not disappear completely. I'm still convinced that going grain free helped (and he still does get some grains in his treats, so maybe that causes the boogers he does get). I would try TOTW. You really have nothing to lose, worst case is he has diarrhea for a few days. Just be sure to introduce it gradually, and wait until he's had several days on pure TOTW to see what affect it has on his eyes and digestive system. Also make sure his hair is not getting in his eyes, that will cause the boogers as well. |
My dogs are on TOTW pacific stream and ears and eyes are perfectly clear (after many years of ear infections with my wheaten) The new pup came on Natural Balance and her poop was impossibly soft and had wet streaks down her little face.I landed up switching her rather quicker than I thought she should but it was for the best! I think it is the probiotics and no grain that is so good. |
Thanks for your input everyone. I decided to try TOTW and I've been introducing it to Rocco gradually over the past week. There has been marked improvement in his eye tearing. And as a bonus (this is gross) he has a perfect stool...much firmer and more condensed than the Wellness, but not too dry. |
Macy came home on Eukanuba. I tried Wellness and within 2 days had itchy feet, itchy skin, watery eyes so bad her little face was wet all the time. I tried TOTW and things seemed to get better and the watery eyes even were better but not completely gone. About a month ago I switched to Nursery water and her eyes are completely cleared up. I switch every couple of days from TOTW (lamb) to TOTW (salmon) and she is doing great. |
