Keeping a Food in the Bag vs. In Container Probably a really dumb question.... But is there any benefit to keeping dry food in a sort of container vs. keeping it in the original bag? I used to keep dry food in the bag but that was when he was on a food with a resealable bag, lol. Now I have been putting it in a 5lb sealed container and throwing the bag away since it doesn't close by itself. Just wondering what you all did with your dog food. |
Small bags - usually just use the bag. E's is in a container though. Thinking of getting air tight containers for them. Definitely a good idea.. I'd save the part of the bag with the lot number and such though in case of recall. |
I got a really neat upright container at Petsmart. It has a handle and a pour spout. You just trim the top off the bag, slide it down in the container. Once you put the top on, it has a pour spout that flips up to pour out the food. It's very handy and double the protection. |
We keep Levi's food in a Vittle Vault...similar to this one: It came with him, so I've just always used it and never really thought about it or looked for anything else. Works well for us! |
I transfer Tibbe's to an airtight container just in case we ever got ants or bugs. Does seem to preserve the smell somewhat more than the bag - and Tibbe loves his food to stink like all get out! The louder the smell the better he likes it. |

I just had always kept it in the bag, never thought about it before, but with the bags that don't really "shut", I don't really like just keeping it open. We have a lot of critters around here, even though I do keep it up higher. Mice have been bad this year, gross! Ants, too. |

^^That is a very good idea...most manufacturers say that the ideal is to keep the food in the bag and to put the bag in a container, stored in dry, cool place. Having the lot numbers is also very good. |
I want Martha Stewart's Dog food bag. I have seen it at Petsmart and it is very well made. Martha Stewart Pets™ Food Storage Bag - Martha Stewart Pets - Dog - PetSmart Right Now I just keep it in the bag. Royal Canin's bags are nice because they seal tightly. But, I like the idea of keeping it in something else. |
I am actually using a 5# plastic container made for storing human foods. I was using it for my Shih Tzu but since they eat their food up faster I plan to put Lexi's food in it now. I also keep that inside a bigger floor container on wheels (that holds larger bags of dog food) & store their bags of treats in that. We have had a lot of issues with ants & now mice (Ick!). |
I bought containers at walmart that I can keep the bag in and it has a snap tight lid.. so everything stays fresh. |

Our pantry is small and our pack is not so I keep the larger bag in a plastic container in a lrg storage closet and then fill a smaller container for the pantry. Keeping the label with the lot number is a great idea, will probably start doing that as well. |
Martha Steward Dog Food Bag Clip... I keep Riley's in the original bag. I bought a Martha Stewart light blue Dog Food Bag Clip from PetSmart a while back.... Looks like one of the potato chip bag clips..... It is made really well.... It's long and clips really Tight. In my TOTW thread....one of the YT members said: [We buy the small 5 lb. bags and per the store's suggestion, keep the kibble in its original container. Apparently, the oils in the kibble can be affected by plastic. Can't remember why. ] |
