Hair Loss! Hi Everyone, I recently adopted Mimi from a shelter and everything has been going great behaviorally and otherwise. HOWEVER, she has begun to lose some of her hair! I don't know what might be causing this. Any ideas or tips, if you have dealt with this?? I would love her even if she were bald, but I would like to at least try and help!! June & Mimi |
First your vet needs to do a skin scraping to rule out mites and other skin problems. |
If the hair is falling out on the head, there is a chance it could be demodex mange. Absolutely visit your vet and let them check. If it is, not to worry as it's not contagious and can be handled with a salve. if it's not that, again, the vet will certainly be able to help. Good luck! |
If this is a young pup, losing coat is normal. If an adult, then depending on where the hair loss is, the vet will need to do tests to figure out what is going on. Sometimes certain infections can be diagnosed with just an exam. Usually bloodwork and/or skin scraping and/or skin culture and/or skin biopsy are needed. Allergy testing can be added to that if she has symptoms related to that sort of thing. Really just depends on what the vet thinks it might be. Your general vet will probably be able to figure it out, but if not, then you'd need to go to a dermatologist. |
Hi Everyone, Thanks for all your feedback! Mimi and I have an appointment with the vet tomorrow, as this behavior hasn't subsided after a week. Will check back here with updates! June & Mimi |
Hi Everyone, Vet has ruled it is likely a food allergy so we're switching foods! I have her on a new holistic diet which should actually help her hair grow in softer and thicker. Thanks for all the feedback!! June & Mimi |
I'm having the same problem with sophie. The vet said its allergies and put her on medicine which sometimes helps and sometimes not. What diet solutions are you using? I recently switched her food. Though her hair isn't falling out anymore, it has grown in much since it stopped. It's strictly on her hind legs, the place she reaches easily. I've tried just about everything I can think. Any help is greatly appreciated. :) |
