Homecookers - how much protein do you feed a day I wondered how much protein you homecookers give your Yorkie a day. I have been giving Tootsy 4oz (COOKED weight) of protein - salmon or chicken or occasionally beef. I am wondering if this is too much. I was told 4oz and now I am wondering if it was meant to be RAW weight, which, when cooked would weigh nearly half of what I am feeding her now! Tootsy has become very hungry since her illness and spay, when she lost quite a bit of weight. She has almost put it all back on now, but is demanding more food. How can I fill her up without her getting fat? The vet wants me to keep her on fish/chicken plus rice only for a week or so until her tummy has settled then start to reintroduce veg. She is eating more than a cup of rice a day and a cup of protein!!!! I told the vet today that I was concerned about her eating all this protein and she said to cut it down, but how will I stop Toots crying for food? Any ideas? |
A cup of rice AND a cup of protein per day? How much does she weigh? 4oz. is too much, but it really depends on the other ingredients, her needs, and her weight - all part of a safe and balanced recipe preferrably created just for her. |
Hi there, thanks for your reply. Yes, I am unhappy about the quantities, too. She weighs just over 10lbs. How much protein should she have a day? I do not want her to get live disease! By the way, she is doing very well now after all the drama. Her tummy is still a little sensitive. I had her lungs Xrayed and a full blood panel done and all is well, phew! The vet says to give her time to get over the whole ordeal, Her stools are very soft, but still shaped so the vet is not concerned at the moment. She says she got very stressed and it will take time for her tummy to settle after all the meds etc I am giving her probiotics now as she had so many antibiotics. I was so grateful for all your help during the whole drama. I just have to find a way of getting her to feel full and not ask for food 4 times a day! She will get huge eating all that she is eating now. Thanks again. hugs |
The optimum protein content for your pup is best decided by your vet or a veterinary nutritionist. 50/50 chicken and rice is fine for recovery, but a 10lb dog should not need 2 cups of food daily. After she recovers, the balanced diet she should go on would not be have meat (unless that is what the formulator of the recipe thought best for her - which is very questionable). She doesn't need to eat 4x daily unless the vet thinks so. She should gain a lot of weight very quickly with this amount of food which wouldn't be good. You can buy a recipe from petdiets.com (the adult maintenance chicken should be fine). It will require a supplement called BalanceIt that you can get form balanceit.com. However, I don't know if they ship overseas. |
Many thanks for this information. I will go to the petdiets site and have a look. She does get a supplement of vitamins and minerals, plus the fish omegas. I normally feed her twice a day - this amount of food is very unusual. She has one and a half cups of food a day, nomally. |
