LP Surgery So we went to the vet today one for a bump but two to talk about Callie's LP. Callie's LP really bothers her after she has had a day with Sammy or has had a big active day. She sees Sammy once a week and after he leave she limps and will try to lay down on whatever dog bed is on the floor wont even attempt climbing the stairs to get on furniture. My vet gave me pain meds and said that we will need to monitor her kidney and liver if she takes these meds a lot. She also suggest going to an orthopedic surgeon and getting the LP surgery. I'm thinking about at least taking Callie in to talk to the orthopedic surgeon and see if he recommends the surgery for her, the odds, and just everything. I'm unsure of what to do so I was really hoping to get opinions and any information I can about LP surgery. A bit over a year ago we were told it was grade 2 in one and grade 3 in the other. It never seems like her leg catches but I can see the one pop in and out almost anytime she walks. I dont want her to hurt but I am terrified of surgery too. |
Very occasion leg lifting may not warrant surgery. It's happening enough that surgery is probably the best option. She is probably in pain and this isn't good for her leg. She does need to see an ortho for an exam. IMO, surgery would be in her best interest. She is a young dog. Lots of life ahead of her... |
My black lab had this problem when he was a puppy. He had the surgery done when he was 9 mos. old, at MedVet in Columbus, OH. The Vet told me this was more common in small breed dogs. |

She would need a crate or small playpen (start training her now to accept it). And yes, she will probably need an e-collar. I know she isn't alone much, so crating may be very hard on her, so I'd start now just in case.. |
I'm so sorry she is having these problems |

Awwww, poor baby. I hope that you are able to see an orthopedic surgeon soon and get some answers. I am terrified of the surgeries too. Mikki has LP so I understand. They are our babies and it is hard on us to let them go through it. Good luck and let us know what the orthopedic surgeon says. |
We decided to have Kimchee go through with the LP surgery because she's young and we didn't want her to develop arthritis or make the other leg worse. She had her surgery 2 days ago. We were terrified of the surgery too but she is a resilient one! I've read that the surgery is 90% effective. It cost about $2000 but hopefully our pet insurance will cover some. Post op care is the hardest part. She was crying and shaking last night because of the pain. The pain meds help a lot though. She's just been lounging around and sleeping most of the day. We just keep her locked up in our bedroom when we're not around. We have to buy some more gates to block the stairways for when she gets better. It's been tough but I do believe that it's better for her in the long run. Good luck with your decision! |
Callie has an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon on Wednesday. They don't want her to eat anything that morning I guess in case they have to sedate her to do xrays. If anyone can think of any questions that are super important to ask let me know also if you can think of any questions I wouldnt think to ask please let me know those too. |
Oh, we just went yesterday for our 1st ortho visit and it was very informative. I posted about it here. We were lucky enough to find a specialist with a wonderful bedside manner, so hopefully you are, too. I can only suggest that you ask questions focusing on the pros and cons of doing the surgery now and keep asking questions until you are comfortable you have a good understanding of both. My Mojo has the same grading as your Callie, and we decided to go through with the surgery, though not immediately. From what I understand, the grade of 3 in particular is serious. A big part of the reason I plan to go ahead with the surgery is because Mojo is so young. I, like komutanon, don't want him to develop arthritis or for his legs to worsen. I'd like to limit his suffering as much as possible. |
Hope she is feeling better soon |
