Anal Glands? Help!!! Hey guys! Question...I noticed this morning Katie Scarlett scooting her behind on the carpet. This is the first time she has done this. About 2 minutes later she went to her potty pad to go. You could tell she was having to strain a bit. It took about 30 seconds of her straining to go. It was a really small, hard poop. It looked normal, no mucus, blood, or diarrhea. She was last wormed on the 26th of September. We have a vet appointment on Friday at 2:45, it was the soonest we could get her in. She is playing now, but has scooted a few more times and whines a bit when she scoots. What could this be? Could it be her anal glands? If it is her anal glands, do I need to take her to the emergency vet clinic today to have her looked at or can I wait until Friday? I am new at all of this and don't want to do the wrong thing. I have read about anal glands and expressing them, but being a newbie, I would rather someone do it for us or show me the proper way to do it. And even tell me if that is what is wrong. She isn't lethargic or anyting. She is wrestling with her snuggle puppy as I type this. Any advice? Help! I am worried! |
It may not be an emergency, but it also can't wait until Friday. Can you try getting her into a dfiferent vet today? Otherwise, yes, ER.. Is it red back there? Does the skin look different than normal? Do you know what anals are supposed to feel like? Best just to have the vet take a look. |
Abby did that and what it turned out to be was poop stuck on her but. I took her to the vet and they fix it but really what I starting doing was what I called butt baths. She was so hairy that it would wind up blocking her. I have since had her shaved and had not had a problem since. |
I looked at her bottom and it looks normal. No redness, no swelling. But I do not know how to properly identify the anal glands. I know they are at 10 and 2 if they need expressing, but that's about it. I am calling around to the different vets in our area now to see if I can get her in to be checked out. Her butt is clean. I did notice one little spec of poopie on the floor after one of the scootings. I cleaned it up. I'm still going to have her checked out either way. I sure don't want it to be somethine more serious than a spec of poop and not have it treated properly. Thanks for your help guys! |
Bolton just had his anal glands drained a few weeks ago. Definately try to get in soon, I'm sure the vet can get you in. The only thing is that it was really hard for me to be in there with him. He cried the whole time and it tore me up. |
Just because you had her wormed doesn't mean she's completely rid of them. I had this issue with Chloe, finally had to go on different meds. The worms crawl right inside and tickle them and it's very annoying. I thought the anal glands were at 7 and 5. I could be wrong of course, I'm no pro! LOL....I read a really interesting article about anal glands and how they become dependent on manual expressing. In another words ...once you start this...you have to keep it up.....This article says that the harder formed poop actually is what expresses those glands as it come out. I have had chloe's glands cleaned regularly though, but this article was interesting. |
Could be.... You should see a vet if you are worried. It could be worms still, or be a hair that digested and is itchy, or a sunflower seed that caused a hemorriod... Is she on raw food? Could be a piece of bone. You could look through her stool to see if anything like that has come out. You should also wash and comb the area to make sure its not a hidden burr or something external bothering her. Is there a fishy smell to her bum? If there is any gland leakage it should smell a little fishy. If you still think its her glands, try pulling her tail straight up in the air, and feel around her anus. Anal glands are under the anus at 4-5:00 and 7-8:00 o'clock, and often feel a little hard or full like a balloon when they need to be expressed. Puppies are quite difficult to do on your own, but if you do want to try, you could try slowly pushing up on the glands towards the anus on the sacs, but if she looks uncomfortable or in pain you should definitely get a vet to do it because they could be abscessed or blocked. I hope one of these suggestions help you! |
Thanks guys! I must've been thinking about driving when I thought of '10 and 2.' I was a nervous wreck and probably not thinking clearly. Thanks for clarifying that for me so I'll know ahead of time now. She does not have a fishy smell at all. We are at the vet right now waiting our turn. Should be in to see vet in a few minutes I hope. They are a little backed up in here today. |
Awwww i hope she is ok. |
Keep us updated!!! I'm hoping nothing serious!!! |
Hey guys! Well, I guess I was overreacting. We went to the local emergency vet clinic that our regular vet referred us to. He was booked solid and referred us to the other clinic. They were great! Turns out the vet at the emergency clinic is the daughter to our regular vet! It was nice to meet her as well! Katie Scarlett is just fine! Her anal glands were fine and so was her stool sample that I took in. I had told the doctor how she had scooted afterwards and how I noticed there was a little piece of poopie on the carpet. She said she was probably just trying to clean herself up. She has not scooted anymore today...just those few times this morning. They also did a routine examination and everything was fine. I felt kind of silly walking out of there, but better safe than sorry. And they only charged me half of a normal routine examination fee, so that was nice of them. |

Yay! Glad to hear she is doing just fine! She is an absolute doll! :) |
Don't feel silly at all!!! You are a good dog parent to have concern and bring her to the vet! The only stinky thing is that you had to pay for the visit but don't be embarrassed by going. |
Thanks guys! I wanted to be sure, even if it was nothing. I want to put her health first and foremost. So although I did feel silly, I am so glad we went in. She is happily playing right now before bed time. :) |
