Toothies Ok, this is probably the dumbest question, but I have no idea and thought I better ask than not know. LOL. Questions on baby teeth...when do Yorkies start to lose their baby teeth? And when they lose them, do you just find them on the floor and dispose of them or what? If the tooth is loose, do I need to be extra careful when brushing her teeth? What about when she is eating? What do I need to know about the whole losing baby teeth process? I know some of that is strange, but I have never had children and this is our first dog and I do not know. I've read a few books but the only thing it went into detail on teeth was brushing and dental hygene. Thanks for any help you can give me! |
Sometimes I would find one on the ground, and sometimes Kaos would eat them. I watched one fall out on my bed, and went to grab it and he beat me to it and swallowed it. (I was a nervous wreck but he turned out all right.) LOL  Good question though. I've had a few different breed pups growing up and I would just remember them being gone, and I would sometimes find one or two in the rug. :) |
Annie was 21 weeks when she lost her front teeth on top and bottom. I never did find one of them. Guess she swallowed them all. It was quite funny - she ran around with her tongue hanging out of her mouth for about a week or so. We are still wating for the K9s to fall out. Hopefully on their own ;-} It gets expensive to get them pulled. But, she gets spayed at 6-1/2 months and if they don't fall out I am going to get them pulled. I don't want to worry about future problems. Good luck, this is our first Yorkie also.:D |
so by 5/6 months some should be coming out? |
Yeah I think Uni's were coming out around 5-6 months. I do remember some of the molars would hang on and she would keep tonguing at them. A little bit of blood too but she seems ok. Those I kept. All that I could find I kept. Those things are tiny! The front teeth I do think they end up swallowing them. I remember while she was teething I saw little white dots in her poop, thinking maybe they were worms! But they were teeth. I was not going to fish those out. She did retain one canine and that was extracted during her spay. That was the only one. If you have the s/n too early, the vet may extract out many teeth costing you a lot of money. I suggest waiting until about 8 months for s/n. |
The vet is suggesting that we spay her at 6 months before her first heat. She said Annie will have less health problems if we spay her early. Is that good info or are they trying to make money? I sure appreciate everyones advice. |

Bloodwork?? What is that for? Being this is my first, when age are they when they go into their first heat? |
It really depends, Uni didn't get her first one until 13 months!! Most go into heat around 6-8 months. Def before one year, but I don't know what happened with Uni. Bloodwork is where they draw some blood and check all the levels. Anesthesia is filtered through the liver and kidneys (?) and if those organs aren't in good condition, they could not be able to clean it out of their system. Something like that. I just know I would not skip this step. Bloodwork will tell you a lot about the health of your dog other than just a regular exam. |
Thanks so much Capt_Noonie for all the wonderful information. I will for sure see that Annie gets blood work done. :D Still a little nervous for the procedure. Poor baby. She is only 3.1 pounds. |
There is a sticky in the library section here (I think it's the library section, or maybe the sick and injured?) about anesthesia protocol. I will see if I can find it for you. 3 lbs is tiny, but that is an ok size to get spayed. |
This is my first Yorkie so I am a nervous Nelly. I wonder how big she will get? Maybe I should wait until she is older? Just wish I knew when she will slow down growing? She hasn't changed much in the last 3 weeks. |
