Atopic Dermatitis My Lily has been suffering from severe itchies off and on since she was a puppy. We'd been to several vets but none of them could really resolve the issue. We just went to a new one Saturday and he said she has atopic dermatitis. Right now, she is on steroids. They actually seem to be helping some. I don't think she'll be on them forever though. |
Does anyone else have experience with this? I got an information sheet about it from the vet and Yorkies are one of the most commonly affected breeds. |
Has skin allergy testing been done so you can give allergy injections instead? Atopica tried? You're right. Steroids aren't going to work long term. In a few years, your pup will likely be a mess if they are constantly used. Antihistamines not working? |
We did do the skin allergy testing but the results aren't back yet. We have not tried Atopica. Once we get the symptoms under control with the steroid medicine, we are going to switch to just anti-histamines and hope it stays controlled. We are also using Visine A. |
My dog had great success on Atopica. Good luck. |

My Cali has been on the Atopica for several years with great success. The testing didn't reveal anything she was allergic to but she was scratching so bad. The Atopica in pill form costs 60.00 for a 30 day supply. Cali is 5#. I have recently been able to get her to every other day so the cost has gone down to 30.00 a month. I hope Lily can get relief from the itching. |
So I guess the vet wants to finish this rx and then see if the symptoms come back before prescribing more meds. |
