Is Frontline (Flea,Tick Preventative)Needed all Year? We give our dogs Frontline topically every month, but I was wondering if it is really necessary in the Winter months? Do any of you skip Nov.-Feb.? Thanks in advance!!! :) |
It depends on where you live and the weather. I am in FL and we use it year round. The first year we had the pups we tried to skip it during the winter and ended up flea infested at Christmas. |
Yep -- depends on where you live. I know some places in Canada don't even have any cases of heartworm or flea/ticks so nothing is needed... lucky them! Here in Maryland, I use it accordingly. Well I give heartworm meds every month, it's not worth the risk to me not to. Flea/tick meds I just play by ear. Usually ticks here are terrible in the summer, however this year, I gave him Advantix in June and did not give again until two weeks ago (first week of October). Never saw any ticks. I probably will give one more dose in December (and skip November) unless I am seeing more ticks around. Last December, I pulled three ticks off him, so ended up having to use the stuff. My usual course of action is to use Frontline from October-April and then I use K9 Advantix in the summer when ticks are usually worse. I prefer using Frontline because it does not contain permerthin but I like to avoid them all if at all possible. |
I use Frontline Plus all year long in NC. |

I'm in NC too, where are you purchasing from. I usually get prevention from Petsmart. Is there a better place to purchase? |
I normally use advantix in the warmer months and switch to frointline in the cooler months. Although last January I did not treat her for that month. I think it really depends on the weather and area you live. Sammy picked up at tick around Thanksgiving time last year in West Virginia and it was snowing there. |
I've been using Frontline for Sasha for 3 years now and have always given it April-September and then skipped the cooler months. She really isn't outside that much. I think next year, I'm going to switch to Advantix because we have more of a problem with mosquitoes than anything around my house and I like the fact that Advantix not only kills everything but also repels against it whereas Frontline doesn't actually repel. |
Thanks everyone. I'm in SC, so I probably will stick to monthly use. I get our Frontline Plus at Costco, but I can't remember how much it is. Gosh, it's just so dang expensive, but it beat dealing with Fleas and ticks!! |

I usually only apply Advantix when there is no snow on the ground! |

I would definitely say it depends on where you live. I tend to use Minksheen shampoo all year and the summer months I use the frontline. The minksheen has mink oil and citronella in it to repel bugs while conditioning their coat. |
Good question! I was wondering about this too. I've got it on my list to ask the vet on our first visit to see what is best for our area. |
