Primal Raw food transition Hi Everyone: I'm planning on starting Princess Chloe on Primal Raw food. I checked their website to find out about the transition from kibble and can food. I was wondering if anyone using Primal Raw could tell me how their transition went. I'm also considering incorporating Honest Kitchen for when we travel. Any advise will be truly welcomed. Many thanks! Naomi & Princess Chloe |
I can't say what my experiences are just yet since I am just getting ready to switch Rosie over tomorrow or Sat but I have done a ton of reading and most everywhere says to just do a cold switch. Considering she has been with a friend of mine since Feb and she has been eating everything from pizza to purina and I would rather not give her any more of that I am just going with the cold switch. It is other raw feeders who say cold switch, the website I bought my food from says a slower approach similar to how we switch from one hard food to another and the girl at the pet store here that sells it says don't start off with meals but give little bites all through the day for a few days until her tummy acclimates. Curious to see what others here have to say on the subject. :) |
When I first made the transition to pre-made raw, I fed kibble one night for dinner. The next meal, I fed them in the late morning (so about 14 hours apart). This was their first raw nugget/medallion. So, I guess I just did it cold turkey. Honest Kitchen works well for travel if you are feeding raw. Also, you could try a dehydrated raw food (Ziwipeak, RealMeat dog food, etc...). We find the dehydrated raw easier on vacation since HK you have to mix with water. We do HK on hand at home though and sometimes feed it in addition to the raw. It's more like a special treat because my girls love HK. *This is what we used to do when we fed raw. Now we are feeding mostly kibble or HK because we moved into a place with a tiny freezer.* |
I did the switch cold. Yes, it may upset their tummy a little, and give them some looser stools. But frankly, (and I apologize in advance if this is considered TMI), but sometimes my stools aren't the same consistency either. Doesn't seem to be an overall health issue for me, and I don't think the odd loose stool is an overall health issue for our dogs. We (the humans) hate it because we deal with the "pick-up"...but frankly I was more concerned with ending the "garbage" she was eating (my Yorkie was on Beneful when I got her) as soon as possible. If I remember correctly (it was over a year ago), there was no worrying tummy upset. |
I feed 1/2 raw and 1/2 kibble. When I decided to incorporate raw into Sasha's diet, I just added it in cold turkey and she was completely fine with it. Every dog reacts to changes differently though. I could switch between brands with her cold turkey and it wouldn't bother her either, but I stick with 1 brand now and just rotate between the 3 different flavors they offer. |
I feed Primal raw in the a.m. and Acana Kibble in the p.m. I did it cold turkey.... Riley never had a problem, with it. I sometimes will do raw both a.m. and p.m. OR kibble a.m. and p.m. |
You can pretty much do it any way you want but remember that kibble and raw food should only be fed hours apart. They digest at different rates and we don't want the raw to be in the intestines as long as it takes the kibble to digest. Raw food digests more quickly. :) |
Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. Yesterday Princess Chloe's last meal at 6pm was Honest Kitchen with boiled organic chicken breast cut in small chunks and nothing more until this morning. I started Princess Chloe on the Primal as suggested on their website, but she immediately went for the raw meat and left the kibble! LOL:yelrotflm I just gave her a 1/3 of Primal and the rest of her kibble, who knew she would like it immediately. Needless to say, I ended up taking away her kibble and giving her the rest of the portion of Primal and she is full of energy and playing around the house. I plan to give her the next nugget this evening with some HK Preference. Many thanks again!!!! Naomi & Princess Chloe |
