Anyone exclusively raw feeding?
 
Just curious. I have been struggling with what is the best way to feed for a long time and have finally come to the thinking that raw and no kibble is best for dog health and teeth. I can find tons of people and other forums on it but would love to hear from Yorkie owners specifically. :)

I feed exclusive raw to my 5lb yorkie. Started due to a health issue in my Miniature Schnauzer, and Charlee just joined the family and the same diet. Now I do BARF, so I add veggies and supplements. Although I was feeding some ground bone my Holistic Vet suggested that sometimes with very small dogs it can cause stomach upset, and as I was feeding a commercial raw, I chose instead to do home-made raw and use bone meal instead of bone. But both my girls are healthy and happy. My schnauzer at the age of 7 has great teeth which every vet seems to think is incredible when they see her. And my Yorkie's teeth are also in great shape...she is only 3 yet, so still very young. I love home-made, both raw and cooked, and will never feed kibble again if I can help it.

I know there are other owners on this forum that feed PREY raw...maybe try doing a search.

Great to see someone else on here feeding raw! I have been reading everything I can find on the subject and am wanting to go with BARF but seems so much I see from other people is with bigger dogs and I really wanted to hear from people with smaller and Yorkies if possible. I think I have decided to start with a commercial frozen raw ONLY because I am just afraid to feed things like chicken with bones in to my little one. I know the frozen will likely have small bones in but I hoped they were small enough to not cause a problem.

So my question is do you feed any whole bones or just the bone meal with meals and if so are their teeth just nice and clean without whole bones? Could I bother you for an example of what you feed in a day?

I have struggled for a long time with feeding kibble and just feeling it was never good enough to satisfy or for their health so I really want to get this right and hopefully never see another bag of kibble in my house. LOL

I have fed pre-made raw (Primal, NV, or Stella&Chewys) for about 3+ yrs now. I really like it for them. Wylie is 7, never had a dental, and his vet loves his teeth. Now, that could be hereditary too...but just thought I'd mention it. I do give lots of chews so the kids work on their teeth....I don't brush (very bad me).

Some here feed Prey Model too, and there are some good threads on this. Oh, btw, there is a thread in the Library on raw too :).

I raw feed my dogs exclusively. My Jay Jay was about 9 months old when I first started with PREY model raw feeding and Innie was about 3 months old. I obtained as much information as possible before I started raw feeding. You can check Yahoo Raw Feeding Group as well as Raw Feeding (RF) in Facebook, if you haven't done so. A lot of small dog owners are there to discuss and to answer questions of the raw feeding. My Jay Jay is 2 1/2 years old and my Innie is almost 1 1/2 years old. Both my dogs had routine check-up with our vet last week and we were told that they are very healthy.

Hi...could you provide a little more detail as what you give them? raw chicken breast, liver, beef, salmon? I really don't know where to start. Is BARF a brand of raw food? thanks

I used to feed Nature's Variety, but I like Primal raw better.
A lot of times I feed Primal raw in the morning and then ACANA kibble, at night. I am out of raw at the moment and just haven't stopped by to pick it up, so I am feeding ACANA kibble morning and night right now.

But, yes it's pretty similar.

I feed roxy nv raw. She gets 2 medallions in the am and 1/4 cup of nv instinct kibble in the pm. I've never given her primal but she loves the raw. I'm going to switch her to all raw soon.

I just got off the phone with my local pet people and they have primal, NV, and stella & chewy's which I think are all good. Amazon reviews seem to go crazy over Stella's so I think it's down to Primal or Stella's. Heck, it's raw so it prob doesn't matter too much you know? it's not cooked or anything so there's really no flavors involved. I love this forum :thumbs up

I have done Stella & Chewy's also... I like the "nuggets" in Primal Raw rather than the patties in Stella & Chewy's. Not sure about taste...but I do know that I had bought Answers raw at one time and Riley did Not like that one.... He literally walked away from it... He has never done that with NV, Primal or S&C's... but he seems to like the Primal one the best.... for sure.

Sorry I haven't been here for a bit. Mine are on a bit of a specialty diet, that I've adapted with help from my holistic vet. But it's basically meat and veggie, with bone meal, vitamin supplement, flax oil, digestive enzyme. While you are trying this out, I think it probably is best to start (as you plan) with a pre-made raw that is balanced. It's the way I started a couple of years ago. And to be honest, I would still be feeding that way if it wasn't for my Schnauzer's issues. The hurtle to get over is the fact that you CAN feed a wholesome balanced diet that doesn't include kibble. For me that was the biggest step...realizing that I could take charge of my dogs' diet and didn't need to depend on kibble to balance it for me.

Thanks for all the replies! I haven't been back to this thread in a couple of days because I went and found others and have been reading almost non stop! My rear end is sore form sitting here! LOL

I have decided to start off with the premade and add in some RMB for her teeth. I just want to be 100% confident before I go prey model all the way. So I have just ordered a ton from what looked like a very good place here in England. I don't think I can get any of the ones you all mention. The one I went with was Natural Instinct - Home So we'll start on that next week.

After all my reading I have decided that raw chicken with bone is fine BUT it still scares me. So my biggest question is this: if I go to the butcher what bones can I ask for that are good for her chewing and teeth cleaning that might not involve her crunching and swallowing them right off just until we settle with this and I am calmer about it. Would something like lamb ribs be something ok to start with as a side to her premade and still be good for her teeth?

I know I still have a ton of reading to do. I feel in my heart this is truly what is best for her but want to make sure I do absolutely right.:)

It's completely normal to be freaked out. I was freaked out too! Now, it doesn't worry me at all. To answer your question, if you were to feed lamb ribs, you must realize that lamb is richer meat than chicken. It is a red meat. Therefore, you would want to reduce the amount of meat on the lamb rib so as to avoid digestive upset early on. The reason chicken is normally used to start out with is that it is one of the least rich of meats and has some of the softest bones. Make sure to trim some meat and all excess fat off the lamb ribs, but at the same time, don't feed a "naked" rib.
