Best Yorkie puppy food? Hello Everyone!! I'm new to this site and the world of yorkies!!! I am getting my little princess next Thursday!! I'm so excited!! I have bought everything except for food...the most important too! I have been doing my research and I am really torn on what the "best puppy" food is. My breeder is feeding the puppies Diamond currently, I can't get it anywhere here. She is sending about a week supply home with us to mix in with her new food. I have been looking at Blue Buffalo, I really like the 1st ingredient to be meat. I also like all natural ingredients with added vitamins and such. Everyone I talk to tells me they have the best, I'm just confused. I went to Petsmart and my jaw dropped....seriously way too many to choose from. I know the best people to ask is someone who has yorkies. So in your experience what is the best puppy food for a yorkie baby? Thank you so much, Sophia!! :aimeeyork |
Sorry if this has been asked alot. Thanks in advance!!:) |
I think it's mainly what works best for your dog individually -- there's no breed specific thing, IMO. :) I think Blue Buffalo is a nice food and many Yorkies have done well on it. They have a lot of different formulas to offer which is nice. As far as Petsmart/Petco goes, my favorites would be Castor & Pollux (they have Ultramix line and Organix line), Natural Balance, Blue Buffalo, Holistic Select, Innova. Some smaller "high end" pet stores will sell things like Orijen and Acana, Fromm, Nature's Variety, etc. But really, dog food can be a really complicated thing, so many different options, opinions, and so much to research. Finding out where the food is produced and manufactured, what feeding trials and tests are performed, etc, etc, etc, and it's all about what you feel the most comfortable with. Each dog is different and will respond to foods differently. :) I will say, as a pup, I wouldn't do too much switching around. I'd try to stick to one thing (so long as she's not having explosive poo, of course) and wait it out, get her stomach used to it. |
Welcome to "YT". There is a wealth of knowledge on the site. All our Yorkies have been rescues thus they are older "pups" so I can not really be much help. You can try a search, the blue bar near the top of the page, for puppy food or however you would like to word the search string. You are sure to get many responses from the YT members. Please post a few pics of your sweet pup when you get the chance. |
I agree with Brister! What works well with one dog, the next will do horrible on.. The best is to find one that works, and stick with it! |
I've been feeding Cesar buffalo blue puppy food since I got him and he seems to enjoy it. |
lola was on health extension at first, now we have her on ultra. she likes it and it is very good for her :) |
When I first got Hudson, my breeder was feeding him Royal Canin for Yorkies. She swears by it and has been breeding for a very long time, and is very reputable. I know some people think it's just "ok" but Hudson liked it. After I got him, I wanted to switch him over to Acana which is definitely a more "high end" brand, very good but available only in pet boutiques. I have never seen it at the larger chain pet stores. Whatever you end up doing, just make sure to transition your food very very slowly if you should so choose. I transitioned Hudson very gradually b/c yorkies can have sensitive tummies. One website that I visited was Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble. It gives reviews of various dog foods. It was helpful to see how certain brands stack up against others but in the end, every dog is different and like others have said, what works for one, may not work for your fur baby. Good luck! |
Organic with out grain is the way to go I find each dog is different...just found out my little yorkie is allergic to chicken so I am switching him to fresh buffalo meat...Taste of th Wild has a nice selection. Orijen is great too! just be careful with the high protien levels in Orijen I think thats what made him allergic and he started licking his paws a lot...Yorkies are a bit tempermental in the Protien department. Keep away from all junk food even though they may love it it will harm them in the end. No spices either! I give my babies 2 homemade meals a day Organic sweet potatoes, pumpkin, carrots, yogurt or cottage cheese and buffalo meat. Then Taste of the Wild dry all day. Yes they are spoiled but they are just that cute! lol Good luck |

We've given Orijen, Blue Buffalo, and Acana a try. At the end, Orijen worked best for us. |
My breeder had our girl on Royal Canin but she wasn't eating well the first week we had her. Didn't know if it was the food or the new environment. I was mixing in some Health Extension, at my breeder's instruction and she spit those out! Anyway, I'm in the process of switching her to Wellness (based on what I read on the Dog Food Reviews web site mentioned earlier) and she seems to like it. I like the ingredients list better than that of Royal Canin. I mix in a teeny tiny bit of Science Diet wet puppy food (chicken and rice) and some gravy from that to her kibble, but it's still mostly kibble, but she REALLY likes that. No more picky eating. You may or may not end up with a picky eater and you, for sure, want to make sure your new pup eats well and doesn't get hypoglycemia. So, keep the wet food mix-in in your back pocket just in case. |
Well said Brit. I agree, it all depends on the dog. What may work for mine, may not work for yours. I've tried alot of foods for Gizmo. He has been on Blue Buffalo before, however it gave him terrible gas and belly troubles. But that's not a knock against blue, Giz just didn't handle it too well. There's alot of "good" foods out there. Many smaller dog food shops and even some websites for dog food provide free samples. Gizmo got a hold of Taste of the Wild from my Mom and that seems to tickle his fancy for now. But once again, it all depends on your dog. |
I also agree with what others have said. You have to find the food that works for your dog as what may work for one, may not work for another. Blue Buffalo Wilderness has always been the food that has worked best for Sasha. When she was a puppy however, she was on Pro Plan because that's what her breeder had her on and I also didn't know anything about quality foods and whatnot or else I probably would've started her on Blue Buffalo puppy food then. She's been eating Blue for over 2 years now and does wonderful on it. I'm extremely pleased. |
Kaos was on Science Diet since he was a puppy. BUT I was honestly clueless about dog food until I came here. :( Now he is being transitioned to Royal Canin Yorkie Formula. It's higher quality than the SD, but its still in my budget and... KAOS GO BANNANAS FOR IT!!!!! :p (seriously he goes CRAZY when he see's me going for the bag) LOL |
