Orijen My baby, Yoni, is a year old. He was on Purina when we first got him, and getting him off it proved to be very difficult. I tried to get him on a few different types of food, like Taste of the Wild, but he is very picky. I eventually just gave up for a while because he seemed to be thriving anyway. But recently I got him on Orijen. I couldn't believe how easily he took to it; he loves it! And it's much higher quality so I was very pleased. However, I've heard that it can be too high in protein for small dogs (Yoni is about 6.5lbs), and can cause kidney problems. Is this true? Should I be worried? |
High protein diets don't cause kidney issues, but they can aggravate a pre-existing kidney issue (esp. if the food is also high in phosphorus - and high protein foods are). So even if your pup has perfect blood work, by age 5 or 6 it is stiill somewhat likely that there will be a reduced kidney function issue present (that goes for all dogs) and you wouldn't know it and would be feeding a food that isn't appropriate. To each their own. I think you should talk to your vet. We don't use very high protein foods here. |
I agree with Crystal. My major concern with higher protein is higher fat follows along with it. I just never felt comfortable feeding something high fat to a breed that has pancretitis issues. IDK.. Just my feelings. |
I Love both Orijen and Acana. I had Riley on Orijen Puppy but I think it may have been a little too rich for him... I switched him to Acana and he Thrives on it.... Acana is also made from Champion Pet Foods but has a little less protein than orijen. You will read a lot of different things about protein but from my understanding it is like Crystal said... a high protein diet is not going to cause kidney issues, unless there are already kidney issues. You can scroll down to the Protein section of this Orijen/FAQ... and then you can access Orijen's White Paper, which is an excellent read. Champion Petfoods | F.A.Q Good Luck! The food thing drove me a little crazy.... :) |
