Yorkie in Heat? I am not sure if this is where I need to post this question. My little Lacey I believe has come into heat. She is swollen and bleeding a little. She is almost 11 months old. How long will she be in heat for and bleeding for? Also, do Yorkie's bleed very much? Should I purchase a diaper for her? I have never been thru this and not sure what to expect. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks!!! :) |
I can't answer "how long" but I wonder why you haven't taken her in to be spayed? |
I have not had $175 to pay the vet to have her spayed. I just found on line this week a facility that will do low cost spaying but I don't want to take her now that she is in heat because it is more costly and more dangerous to do surgery during this time. At least that is what I was told. As soon as she is thru this then I will be taking her to be spayed. |

How Long Does Heat Last for the Yorkie? Heat can last from 2 to 4 weeks. Each cycle may be different. For example, your Yorkie's first heat may last 2 weeks and her next one may last 4. I also found this for you. Dog in heat. What to expect when your dog comes in heat I read that on some website... Not sure if it is true. I would just buy the diapers if it were me, until you are able to get her spayed. |
Hello and welcome to YT :) Please be sure to keep your girl away from unaltered males even after she stops having a bloody show. I believe this is when a female can become pregnant. Even if you have a diaper or belly band on the male they can still tie and cause a pregnancy. You need to be especially vigilant with her so that you are not put into a situation that you are faced with her becoming pregnant. You are correct that while in heat is not the time to spay so just please be very careful with her the next several weeks. :) Here is a link to a Spay Certificate program. You should invest in a diaper for her unless you want to be cleaning the blood off of everything. She may not be bleeding a lot to you but that is because she is probably keeping her self clean. It will get on your furniture and is hard to get out. |
When Maggie goes into heat, we put diapers on her when she is bleeding. It usually lasts 2-3 weeks. Sometimes she seems to stop and then starts bleeding again after a couple days too. She hates the diapers and is a pretty good 'escape artist' and manages to get the diaper off most of the time, so we have to put it on pretty tight. It's either that, or we get blood all over. Maggie is about 9 lbs or so. We also have a Maltese named Lilly. When she goes into heat, her bleeding is very minimal and we usually don't need diapers on her. She is considerably smaller than Maggie though. |
Help! My little Gracie just came into heat - at least, we just noticed her washing herself a lot today, and she is getting swollen. Hubby only gets paid once a month, and that won't be til the last week of the month. Any ideas for makeshift diapers that will stay on? So far, the sock with leg holes has hit the deck; my girl is also an escape artist! She is just under 7#. We also plan to get her fixed, like the previous poster, but were going to do so this fall when the income gets a little more stable in our house, and Gracie beat us to it. Things are pretty tight here in MI. I'd appreciate any good ideas! |
You have to be very, very diligent. Not only will other male dogs be attracted to her - but her hormones will be telling her to go and find a mate. It's not just escaping from her diapers that you need to worry about! It usually lasts about 3 weeks, and although the bleeding can be minimal it certainly goes a long way!! Plus it has a 'certain smell'!! Also, the cycle varies greatly from dog to dog. With our labrador it was 6 months until the next one - but with Harry's mum it was under 2 months (which is how she got 'caught' again!!). Oh, good luck! Sally + Harry x |
You need to remember that male dogs can smell the scent your female in heat is letting off for up to a mile. Even if you have a fenced yard do not let her out alone. A male dog will smell her urine and try to climb your fence just to find her. It drives them nuts. I would also be careful when walking her. A male dog could approach you and you would not have much warning. This is a dangerous situation. Yokies have been attacked by bigger dogs when they are not in heat. The scent will last several weeks so keep your eye out for other dogs. |
Heat=Spay...Unless you plan on breeding you should have your girls spayed. For their Health....You dont want your girls developing Pyometra.. Seen more often in dogs than cats, pyometra means pus in the uterus. Pus (white blood cells that accumulate in defense of infection) buildup can escape through the uterine tract and is seen as a discharge from the vulva and often collects on the fur under the tail and back legs. In some cases no discharge is present... called a closed pyometra. Various factors play into the development of pyometra such as irregular heat cycles, bladder or vaginal infections, hormone imbalance, and false pregnancy episodes. The uterine cavity becomes infiltrated with pus and mucous from the infection and distends, stretching and thinning the uterine wall. Bacteria and toxins enter the bloodstream and cause havoc with the kidneys, liver and other organs and may lead to endotoxic shock and sudden death. Veterinarians treat pyometra as an emergency surgical case and are reluctant to simply "try some antibiotics". Pyometra can be fatal! |
Thanks for the good info. I know about not letting her out - she doesn't go out unless I'm holding her, or walking her on her leash - which isn't going to happen right now. We don't have a fenced yard and our other dog only goes out on a cable leash on occasion. No male dogs here! (plus, I've bred cocker spaniels in the past, so know what to look out for) Yes, I plan to have my girl fixed ASAP, she just beat me to the punch. I've covered all my furniture and we steam clean the carpet once a week, thanks to her less than perfect peepad use (hubby swears he's going to attach a rear view mirror to her behind!) He asked last night if he should go get Gracie some Midol. I THINK he was kidding! :rolleyes: |
