Is Broccoli safe for Yorkies ?? I have been told that broccoli sldn't be feed to Yorkshire Terriers because there is alot of calcium in it and with yorkies being prone to "stones & crystals" in their urine tract that broccoli & cauliflower sld be avoided. I wasn't feeding him much, perhaps 2 little stems a day as a treat. Has anyone else ever been told that ??? |
Broccoli is fine in small amounts. The important thing to remember relative to nutrients is balance. Broccoli can be toxic to dogs in high quantities because of isothiocyanates in the plant. Isothiocyanates can cause gastrointestinal irritation and digestive disruption. You should restrict broccoli to no more than 10 percent of your dog's daily nutritional intake. |
Joey's eats a piece or two, when we have it for dinner, he loves it, and of course this means no cheese coating. Dogs need lots of calcium, and I wouldn't worry about it if your dog isn't prone to stones. As Maximo said, moderation is key. |
Thx for your advice. Guess it's a case of in moderation. |
Uni loves broccoli. She gets it only once in awhile as we don't eat it much. Raw or steamed she isn't picky. |
My boys get all kinds of veggies when we make them but plain, no butter, salt, cheese, spices .. just plain. They LOVE cucumbers and my Dad had told that he read somewhere the they are a natural flea deterrent. Not sure how true that is since I can't find anything about that anywhere. They love carrots, apples, broccoli, green beans (I think these and cucumbers are their favorites) but everything is in moderation of course and not every day. |
My main concern about brocc or cauli is gastric distress...like w/ humans, these veggies can cause bloating, pressure, gastric issues. But if that doesn't happen, then yep - I agree w/ moderation. |

Broccoli is completely acceptable if the pup isn't having tummy upset from it. Ellie used to eat that and cauliflower all the time without issues. Sometimes it would be everyday for weeks. Never bothered her (it was part of her diet - we switched it up every few weeks). Yup, the weirdest things can set pups off. Ellie can't tolerate white potato. Rylee does best on chicken by-products with beet pulp. They are all individuals. |
My dogs like broccoli and cauliflower and they have no digestive upsets from it. I dont feed it raw usually. As to your concern about calcium and oxalate stones -- it is a low oxalate containing food and is suitable for those watching their intake of oxalate for stone prevention. I would of course check with your veterinarian as to your specific dog. |
We feed Harry twice a day - and included in those meals are always a certain amount of veggies. He loves carrots, peas, green beans, sweetcorn, cauliflower + broccoli, all cooked with no added extras - and he adores sweet potatoes. He hasn't had a dodgy poo since he was about 4 months old. I really think (as with all dogs and humans!) everything in moderation and if it upsets them in any way - then just cut it out. Sally + Harry x |
I use to prepare Roxy a mix that includes: Brown rice, quinoa, oatmeal, blueberries, apples, pears, pineapple, carrots, broccoli, pumpkin, sweet peas, chicken and beef, along with other in season vegetables and she seems to do fine with it. As a matter of fact, it does wonders with her. Her stool is firm and almost odorless the same with the urine, no allergies and she does not need to drink a lot of water. I believe that almost all veggies are good for them (with the exception of the ones that are toxic, of course), the only thing is that you should introduce them one at a time to determine if they tolerate or not that particular vegetable. With Roxy I leaned that she does no do too well with potatoes, so I do not give it to her anymore. |
