Loaded baked potato w/skin harmful??? Can baked potato with sour cream, cheese, bacon bits and butter, all mixed up, hurt a dog???? The dh ate at the coffee table and got up for a few minutes, and I wasn't aware that he got up and left his plate there!! Well, here comes Betty Boop, sneaking and tip-toeing in and ate a pretty good bit of it, including the potato SKIN, which had Kosher salt on it. I've already laid down the law that from now on, we will eat at the kitchen table!!!!!! I bet her little stomach will be gurgling by early morning and also we will be going to the vet tomorrow. Thanks! |
How long ago was this? I would consider inducing vomiting because of the fat content alone. |
10 to 15 min ago |
I'm very worried for Betty Boop because of her recent digestive problems and history of them. |
Yes, it can definitely hurt a dog, especially one of a breed that is prone to pancreatitis. None of this was toxic. It's just way too high in fat. You could call the vet and ask what to do, do nothing and hope for the best, or induce vomiting. I don't like telling people to induce vomiting. Really, only veterinary staff should be telling an owner to do that. But if I was in this situation with a small dog, that is what I would do. |
I wish some of the more experienced people were here right now...I would call the ER doc and explain Betty Boop's history and ask about inducing vomiting with hydrogen peroxide. You can induce for up to 2 hours, but the sooner the better. Ask how much hydrogen peroxide. I'm worried about her processing all of that fat from bacon bits, butter, and sour cream. |
Glad someone more experienced showed up. :) |
I called the ER clinic. They said inducing vomiting would be extreme. I told them about her history of sensitive stomach. I think I'll induce vomiting. How much does it take for a 5-1/2 lb dog? |
I called the ER vet back and they don't recommend inducing vomiting at home on a small dog because of other problems like aspiration, so they are of no help right now. |
I would go with their recommendation then...and monitor Betty Boop closely and take her in at the first sign of trouble. Discuss this with your vet for future emergencies. |
Thanks for your posts! I'm just going to keep a close eye on her. I know I will be in the car at the first sign of distress. I pinned down the dh and asked him just how much he thought she ate. He said he had already eaten a lot of the potato mixture but had left the skin. He said she ate about half of the skin, but I'm sure there was some potato mixture sticking to it. |
Oh Boop...you little stinker! Lila, I hope this passes and Boop has no ill effects. Sending prayers all will be well. Good idea to keep a close eye her. Let us know how she's doing tomorrow. |
Yes, I'd say listen to your veterinary staff. It's good that she may not have gotten much of the mixture. That said, for "me", the risk of not would be too high, but I'm NOT a vet. Big healthy dog - let it go. Small dog with GI issues, well, in all honestly there is some risk here. Yes, there are problems with inducing vomiting and only a vet can really assess the situation (which you have already had done). I've induced vomiting several times and have never had a problem. Good luck. |
I also would have induced. |
I'm hoping Betty Boop only ate a little of the skin and not much of the fatty extras. Hoping she'll be fine. |
